Reaching out to different resources and negotiating to bring the most benefit to students has been my duty for the academic year. As the president of Multicultural Club, I am also taking the lead in creating a diverse community on campus by celebrating different cultures ' perspectives and traditions, including food, places, and festivals like Diwali and Chinese New Year, to strengthen the sense of identity and appreciation of everyone. Additionally, I also volunteered to build an official website for RePlay for Kids with Joomla, a non-profit organization repairing and adapting toys, and educating families and clinicians and thus could ignite the hope of life for those families that are currently in their low.

Seated on the plane to Beijing, I was thinking all the way on what I did through the past year. My mind went back to the time when my friends and I worked together for Chinese orphans by creating a club. With 100 dollars from donation, I asked several classmates to help me set up a club called ‘Bring Me Hope Club’ to cooperate with a global NGO: Bring Me Hope, to raise money for Chinese orphans and build long-term personal one-to-one relationships with them.…

By being a well-rounded student through my diverse involvements at Xavier, I inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and branch out and try new things. As a freshman from Nairobi, Kenya, I experienced culture shock which made me isolate myself from the Xavier community since adjusting to a new environment, weather, education system, food, and culture was difficult for me. As soon as I decided to get involved in my second semester at Xavier, I began getting the full Xavier experience that is always advertised as I formed relationships with people who would later positively impact my life. My decision to get involved has opened my eyes to many opportunities and has led me to win prestigious scholarship awards at Xavier such as the 2016 Antonio Johnson scholarship and receive the 2016 Diversity and Inclusion recognition award for my efforts to create a campus culture of diversity and inclusion.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

A group of over twenty students from different walks of life sit in a circle around a large pieced-together table in a residence hall lounge. They identify as domestic or international, male, female or non-gendered, heterosexual or LGBTQ+, religious or without religion, able or disabled, as one race or of many, and share one goal: to eat one last feast as one large community. I had the wonderful privilege of working for these students. Attending this special occasion with them gave me a picture of the impact a university setting has on a student population.
