I have a lot of experience interacting with patients through working in a nursing home, the hospital, and my clinicals so as a general rule I usually feel pretty comfortable around patients and interacting with them. I have found that I am genuinely interested in patients’ stories, and what has gotten them to the place they are currently at. I also tend to be a really empathetic person.
d. I hope to be exposed to the struggles that many people are facing today, and to gain a higher comfort around those with mental illness. People with mental illnesses are becoming more and more frequent in the general nursing population and I would like to get this experience to better my nursing career in the future, wherever that may take me.
• I think the general rules to HIPAA still apply: don’t leave your computer unattended without being locked, don’t talk about the patients in an open area where people could overhear, only share information that is pertinent to the patient’s care. Where I think it will differ is how much the patients know about each other. Since there is group therapy on the units, now the patients know some of what each other is going through.
