I am a preacher kid, always have for as long as I can remember. I was dating this guy for a year then I end up pregnant. Now for me being a preachers kid this was the unpardonable sin and my scarlet letter. Toward the last few months of my pregnancy he began to smoke crack. At that moment, I knew that I wanted better and my child that I was carrying deserved better. I dragged myself to church Sunday after Sunday believing that God had forgiven me. Yet, the church members began to throw verbal stones that struck me to my heart. I cried from time to time but refused to let them still the joy that God had given me. Two days later, she stopped breathing and I popped her diaper and she began to cry. I immediately call her pediatrician and he told me to bring her in. He ran all kinds of test and found nothing. Not being pleased with his effort he admitted her into the hospital for even more test. That hospital transferred her to Lebonour Children’s Hospital an hour and a half away. They found out that her white platelets in her blood were severely low and she needed a blood platelet transfusion immediately. The doctors wanted to draw fluid off her brain because her test results were puzzling. I watched them tuck her into a ball, she began to turn blue due to no oxygen supply, draw fluid from her spine. The doctors gave her two bags of platelets. She stayed in the hospital for a month and was released. The doctors could not figure out what cause her complications but I knew that it was a life changing event for me. This humbling situation caused me to fall down on my knees, totally surrender my life to Christ and develop a real relationship with Him. Diversity can be seen within the public view as “Black lives matter,” or “Police lives matter,” it is seen in race and even the workforce. The military was halted with the choice of putting women on the frontline and letting gays be in the military. Diversity is seen here by gender and sexuality. “Diversity can be classified by ethnicity or the community in which you are associated” (Takeuchi 2002). When the government is collecting data on those on assistance they are zoning in on the minority who are in need of food, shelter, and medical treatment. “Just because you have been where a client may be does not make you experienced to help them with their situation” (Hasting 2002). Everyones experiences are not the same and we all deal with them differently. Not every African American, Mexican, Chinese, Caucasian, Jew, Greek, Deacon, Pastor, mother or father deal with any situation the same, so just because you are in their group it does not mean that they will approach a situation the same as you. We are all created uniquely different. “Becoming competent in diversity is through living and learning the culture as well as yourself” (Hasting 2002). Life is filled with golden nuggets that will help you to be more and more sensitive to dealing with persons of different rays of life. In the introduction to his book, The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality, Walter Benn Michaels introduces his views on why diversity has come to be more appreciated than in times past, as well as his main point and goals for his book. Michaels organizes his introduction with an approach that allows a reader to fully understand his goals for the book, but uses a style of writing that may prevent an audience without extensive knowledge of the subject to fully grasp the meaning of Michaels’ message on diversity. Michaels begins his introduction by discussing The Great Gatsby. In which, a penniless man, Jimmy Gatz, transforms into a rich man that is an epitome of the American values of the 1920’s but is still unable to win…

That next year, I was suspended seven times in school, run-ins with the police, and any other kind of trouble I could get evolved in. One day, my Pastor pulled me aside and talked to me, about how what I do now will affect me later on make me into someone I don’t want to be. Ever since then, he filled that void of a father I never had. Every boy wants that fatherly, manly figure in their life, and he was that figure that I would just watch and want to be like after that day. He never did “go throw the ball out back” with me, he is a very busy man, but to know he loves me and cares what I do with my life, is enough to fill that void in my heart.…

There are many definitions of valuing diversity. They tend to have in common the view that in order to value diversity one needs to understand and accept differences. The impact of valuing diversity should be felt on the bottom line in terms of enhanced productivity and profitability. Diversity “Diversity is the sum of all the people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, values and beliefs as assets to the groups and organisations in which they interact”; “The mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, perspectives, values and beliefs into their companies or organisations”; or simply put “All the ways in which we differ” Valuing Diversity “Recognizing and appreciating that individuals are different and that…

The crucible was about a lengthy trial which caused many people to open their eyes and see the bigger picture. In my opinion, most have gone through, or will go through, a severe trial during their life that will cause them to change their perspective. For me the trail I experienced which impacted me the most was seeing my little sister in critical condition at the age of two. I was nine and my world turned upside down for what seemed like forever. Although I was young at the time, the thought of not having my little sister in my life impacted me strongly, and led me to mature.…

To my dismay I soon apprehended that I was not as open-minded as I had presumed that I was. I had not developed a culturally competent way of thinking until I entered into Wayne State University’s School of Social Work program this fall.
