I am a nurse practitioner and have worked in the ER at St. Mary’s, St. John’s, Sarah Bush Lincoln, and Memorial for the past three years. Although I did not receive medical trainings like my physician colleagues, I am competent that I can diagnose and manage common health complaints seen in the ER and EC. I have great respect for the nurses whom I have worked with, and most of them understand the value of team work and the importance of communication between nurses and providers in order to achieve the best quality of patient care in such a fast pace environment. However, I had a very unpleasant shift and was subject to so called lateral violence from the two nurses, Leigh Ann and Kate, at the South EC two weeks ago. After a careful consideration, …show more content…
I told Kate that the patient’s ear problem shouldn’t cause tachycardia, and base on the history, his ear problem is on the very bottom of my differentials for his dizziness. Nonetheless, Kate gave a reason for patient’s tachycardia and did not seem to grasp the seriousness of patient’s complaint after the explanation. In order to avoid further conflict between Kate and I, I returned to the room, checked the patient’s ear, reported my findings to her, and repeated the need for EKG NOW. Moreover, I added, depend on the EKG result, the patient might need to transfer to ER by …show more content…
There should be policy implemented to discourage these disruptive behaviors. Leigh Ann and Kate may have good work experiences or nursing skills. However, I view specific nursing knowledge or skills are more teachable or at least learnable, but the dimensions like character, work ethic, basic intelligence, empathy, respect for others, and values are more ingrained. In the face of nursing shortage, I cannot offer you with a solution nor am I in the place given you a recommendation regarding how to stop lateral violence in the workplace. One thing I have learn from this experience is that nurses are not your most important asset. The right nurses

Zinn, Guglielmi, Davis, and Moses (2012) noted that the present shortage of registered nurses will grow to a staggering 1 million by the year 2020. With this being said, the need to attract, properly train, and retain nursing staff is crucial to the future of health care. It is well known among nurses that the first year working as a new nurse is one of the hardest. Jones-Bell, Halford-Cook, and Parker (2018) recognize that entry into practice is often described as difficult and conflicting between expectations and reality. Besides the incongruence between nursing education and nursing practice, the job itself is stressful and requires skills, confidence, and competence in order to deliver safe patient care.…

2).Moreover, horizontal violence has an impact on patient care and would likely be the cause of errors and mistakes (Anderson,2011,p.28) and would be the reason for ineffective communication , thereby, compromising the patient’s safety (Granstra,2015,p.254). I also believe that as graduate registered nurses, they should be familiar with professional boundaries and their scope of practice , to avoid role confusion that results to fertile background for bullying, harassment and miscommunication regarding division of responsibilities (Eagar, Cowin,Gregory,& Firtko, 2010,p. 94).For me, I have often wondered how should I respond to situations where lateral violence is present. I also thought about what appropriate actions should I take if this happens to me or to my co-workers. From the discussions and the strategies we developed in the toolkit (Appendix A) .…

This is uncivil behavior that needs to be changed in order to maintain a healthy work environment. This is described in Stopping the Culture of Workplace Incivility in Nursing when the author states, “Nurses will have to work together to ensure that communication between veteran nurses, new graduates or novice nurses, and other members of the healthcare team is collegial, respectful, and helpful” (Khadjehturian, 2012, p. 639). This illustrates how without the respect and civil behavior occurring throughout all members of the healthcare team, that proper patient care is unable to be performed.
