Jessica Catherine Stephens: Poem Analysis

I am Jessica Catherine Stephens. I am a small leaf apart of a large family tree. I am the daughter of a strong-willed southern belle and a hard-working northern gentleman. I am a mixture of beliefs, styles, and personalities I’ve encountered throughout my life. I am a younger sister to a slowly calming daredevil. I am a proud mother of two, a Cairn terrier mutt named Charlie and an aging sassy cat named Missy. I am a retired girl scout and participant of many sports-none of which I was good at. I am a part of a southern Baptist family with closed minds. I am one to keep my mouth shut around these individuals. I am a in a very strange family, if I do say so myself, but I have to love them. I am in an amazing group of friends, whom I’m sure agree, …show more content…
I am taken by the sound of an orchestra’s chorale. I am fascinated by the sight of a sunrise. I am taken at the movement and flow of words. I am amazed at art pieces that create emotion. I am in love with transformations. I am longing for spontaneity while only lacking it myself. I am a dreamer. I am a visionary of the unreachable. I am breath taken by the thought of the vast unknown. I am a wonderer of the nonexistent and the impossible. I am in love with ideas. I am in love with imagery and imagination. I am an artist. I am an aspiring illustrator. I am going to be the one to capture what I love. I am still learning. I am who I …show more content…
I am fighting no one in particular, more of an imaginary thought. I am a survivor of high school and its tendencies to cause me stress. I am very timid, less than I was before, but still shy. I am not one to volunteer. I am one to mix corn and dog food in a toilet to get out of seeing people. I am not one to be excited for social outings, including school. I am one to be used as a doormat. I am one to be taken advantage of. I am one to shut people out to prevent it. I am usually not a happy person. I am judged a lot and not usually understood by everyone else. I am a person who’d much rather prefer to be alone than having to be around other people. I am strong. I am a human being who should receive the respect any human deserves. I am a human being not a plastic doll. I am who I

This week, our class had the chance to read four interesting poems of Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, We Real Cool, Mad Girl’s Love Song, and Hanging Fire. Each of these poems highlight the important role that imagery and other poetic devices play into an interpretation of a poem and how crucial it is to understand the perceptive of a poem’s speaker. The poem I enjoyed the most this week was Hanging Fire by Audre Lorde. On the surface, Hanging Fire is about a 14 year-old who struggles with typical adolescent things such as bad skin, boy problems, school dances, and braces. However, once we re-read the poem and took the time to analysis it, it because quite clear that teenaged problems are not the only things troubling the speaker.…

Poets express their concerns about the Nazis and Jews through the use of poetic devices in order to create a response in the reader. The poets, Lily Brett and Trish McCallister, crafted these poems to express the poor living conditions, the barbaric nature of the Nazis and the suffering Jews inside the camps. Through the use of poetic devices such as imagery, irony, repetition, personification and onomatopoeia, both poets are able to portray their concerns to the reader about the Holocaust. Through the use of poetic techniques, the reader is left feeling antagonised and empathetic.…

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

More traditionally poetry is used to share details of a poet’s thoughts, emotions and views on different things that he or she has experienced. The author of the poem “Sixteen”, Chelsea Rathburn, seems be using it to share experiences she has had facing motherhood as a single parent but Chelsea then explains that it is a persona, kind of like a fictional narrative. Chelsea is a creative writing professor at Young Harris Collage and is marred to James Davis May. Together the couple had a child named Adelyn; it is very simple to assume that she has the experiences in the poem, since it is about a daughter and a mother just like her and her daughter, but when interviewed Chelsea explains otherwise.…

The poet positively embraces her bi-cultural heritage, perceiving the dual perspectives of her parentage as a source of enrichment that drew her closer to other cultures. She feels very close to Mexican culture because of the sense of otherness that Mexicans feel in the United States; a sense of otherness that she can identify with. In an interview with Phoebe Davidson, she explains her attachment to other cultures, and particularly Latin American culture: "It doesn’t matter it isn’t my culture, I’ve always felt that any little bit of other in our lives …gives much more than it takes away" (1998,162). Many Arab-American women have sought spaces of empowerment and visibility through alliances and coalition-building with other minorities. For…

For many centuries, poetry has been at the center of communication and expression. Poetry has progressed, and styles have changed. However, there are some concepts in poetry that have not been transformed; every single poem contains a theme that readers can analyze. In the poem,"Minerva Jones" by Edgar Lee Masters ,he writes about the sad life of an old crippled lady who was hated. I learned that this person is a writer of poetry and isn 't very pleasant looking from how Masters describes her. The person she speaks about in the poem are "Butch" Weldy and Doctor Meyers, who have different poems of their own as well. " Butch" Weldy is the one that hunts down Minerva (Goddess of Wisdom) and Doctor Meyers is the one that attempts to save her. The poet lets us know that small-town America is very judgmental because you can say that those who were wise were the ones being judged("hunts") by their appearance and their beliefs.…

During our life’s journey, our experiences and relationships we have with others are often the most memorable when we are able to see things in a new way. However, such memories and relationships we have with others stick with us so strongly that we will forever see certain people and events the same way, with an unchanged perspective. Monumental moments, such as a loved one’s death in “Violets,” by Gwen Harwood does not alter the persona’s view of their parents. In contrast, the persona in “Violets” is able to reflect on the memories of herself as a child and her relationship with her parents in another light. At some point in our personal journey, our childlike innocence is often shaken and we are forced to mature into adulthood.…

I am a being with a mind, heart, body and soul. The real question is what differentiates me from the 7 billion people that live on this planet we call earth? I have become fascinated with the thoughts of why do I like a certain type of food or drink even down to the soap I use when I bathe. These simple questions brought about the bigger questions about who I really am. I began thinking and came to the conclusion that I am a selfish, hardworking, and a trustworthy individual.…
