Personal Narrative: A Career As A Father

My life changed after I found out that I was going to be a father at the age of 14. At that time, there was no joy or celebration. My future seemed bleak and I felt guilty that Skyler, my son, would have to endure hardships alongside me. My outlook changed when Mrs. Clark, my health teacher, disclosed to the class that she was once a teen parent. Her journey to becoming a teacher inspired me to accept the choices that I’ve made and grow from them. During high school, I constantly reflected on my goals and took on new responsibilities so that my son and I could have a decent life.
Early on, becoming a physician never crossed my mind. I wanted an exciting and fulfilling job, and most importantly, one where I would be able to support Skyler. Shortly after graduation, I became an intern firefighter at a rural town in Clark County, Washington. Serving the community was personally rewarding, and I quickly learned how to be a first responder in various medical and traumatic emergencies. However, there were times where I felt helpless with my level of training, that it was

I have seen patients unintentionally project their frustrations towards the staff and the importance of understanding their distress and approaching every patient with the same level of respect. Being a young father while working, attending college, and having experiences with various emergency systems, I believe I have the emotional capacity to handle stressful situations and the resilience to bounce back from the bad days. It would be an honor to be given an opportunity to join the ranks of the physicians who have continued to inspire me throughout these

We were introduced to an array of doctors and surgeons that practiced emergency medicine in combat. These men and women taught us about their role in stabilizing recently wounded soldiers, and performing imperative medical procedures.…

Although my aspirations in life revolve around the promise of becoming a physician, however, if this were no longer a feasible option, my alternate career path would consist of entering the field of medical research. Particularly, I would have my heart set on clinical research within the pharmaceutical industry. This stems from the fact that I have the ability to be immersed within a hospital setting, I am able to build upon the foundational concepts of each of the scientific areas of study, such as biology and chemistry, and I possess the ability to indirectly contribute to the well-being of others. As a clinical researcher, I will be permitted to test the quality, effectiveness, and safety of various medications, treatment methods, or diagnostic devices in response to the overall well-being of a patient.…

Recently, I have focused on shadowing two physicians at Ear, Nose, and Throat Care in Oak Cliff, Texas and providing dinner to a youth emergency shelter through the charity SouthWest Kids. These experiences reinforce and strengthen my motivation toward a health career because by becoming a physician I will be providing a service to the community by supporting and treating the members that make up the community.
