Personal Narrative: An Individual's Life

Improved Essays

I, for one, am a big believer that an individual 's life should be expressed through being a tool to inspire, to influence, and to create change for a better world. As cliche as this may sound, just going on in our lives and living can be easy, but fully living and using your life to impact others is a portion of what makes you bold and remembered. Merrill Joan Gerber is one of the very few people that comes to mind when I think of someone who entirely encapsulates this persona. We are saddened by the fact that we lost such a wonderful individual at the age of seventy-seven on the date twenty-eight of September twenty-fifteen, due to Coronary Artery Disease. Some people may think it 's strange that I could feel an odd connection with someone I haven 't even met just through words formulated into novels, but I find it as God 's way of saying you 're not alone. I decided that I need to meet the person whose works has influenced my life in ways I can 't explain. I was fortunate enough to find out that she is a fiction writing teacher at California Institute of Technology and she was eager to meet up, and since then, our friendship has grown, as I explained to her how much impact her talent has had on me alone. I not only learned that there will be better days, but I also gained a new friend who helped guide me with the next three years of my life. I wish that I could have been able to say Merrill was a part of my life for far more years than that, but the world has its ways and we are all lucky to have known

She lays on me, painting my chest with her ebony hair. With each of my breathes her head rises and falls, it must of been the the simple rhythm that sent her to sleep. I have not known her long, or even know her middle name, but as I hold her delicate frame, a thousand thoughts go through my head. I think about how she feels under my hands, how her comforting warmth radiates to them. I think about how much I want her, yet love her at the same time.…

It couldn’t have been past 10 a.m. when the alarm went off. We all knew what it meant- we were firefighters, it’s what we do. The fire chief told us that an apartment complex in downtown Boston had gone ablaze, and that it was really bad. We quickly got into our uniforms and hopped on as the fire truck left the station. We were a few miles away before I saw the smoke, a dark giant against the bright blue sky.…

Last night my dog bit me! My dad about shot him in the head with a shotgun, but I told him not to because that Bruiser, my dog, is too stupid to know what he did. He still wanted to shoot him in the face so I stood in front of Bruiser and told my dad to lower his weapon. I knew he would because I’m his baby girl and I can get anything I want, but I don’t do that because then I would be a spoiled brat and no one wants that.…

April 22nd, 2014, it was supposed to be like any other day for James. Wake up, eat breakfast, go to his job, return home to his family, sleep, rinse and repeat. It was like this for the longest time, day after day the same process; however, today would be different. James woke up, munched on donuts with coffee, and arrived to work with just a few minutes to spare despite needing to attend an early meeting. He was unable to remember; it seemed to be a trend lately and the boss certainly was not appreciating the lack of profession.…

Almost two years ago now, we met again for the second time in our lives. You found me (a teenager) which like many others before been neglected as a kid. Walked around with the belief that I'd never know what it felt like to be loved, so I closed off my heart and made it impenetrable. Believing that if I stayed emotionless I could endure and survive any loss or pain, manipulation. You were warmth and compassion.…

It was cancer, a tumour in his brain. They unearthed it in an MRI, after he kept having blackouts. 5,187 people died due to brain cancer in 2012, and my dad was one of them. Sitting by his hospital bed, I was not able to find the forte to look into his eyes, because I’m terrified that I will catch the moment the warm glow in his gaze will be replaced with an emotionless, lifeless stare… It was a long road down to this juncture; each step more ruinous that the last, everyone, weaker than they were before.…

Prologue Time passed slowly in the small town of Rosemont, Pennsylvania. Nothing bad ever happened. At least, not anything that happened in the eyes of the people that lived there. I moved there when I was sixteen, with my mother, my father, and our crusty old fat cat. My mother was a taller woman, thin- almost unhealthily so, so that her clothes hung off of her a bit.…

On the windy lukewarm night of October 13, 2012, my life changed in a positive way. That day was the day I got my first dog, a female Shih Tzu, and I remember that day vividly. It all started as soon as I woke up with crazy bed hair, and I had a feeling that something would happen. After I woke up, I got dressed, had a nutritious breakfast, and went off to school. That Wednesday was a very stressful day due to the many things I had to do, which were to write an essay for English, a group history project, and a new lesson in Algebra 1.…

The birds are singing outside, light beaming in through my blue curtains. I slowly open my eyes, blinking and trying to adjust to the harsh sunlight peeking through. You can’t learn if you don’t try When I was in my childhood, I was a very timid person. I was afraid to try all the new things and meet new people. As a result, my dad began to encourage me to try out different things, such as swimming, playing piano and playing tennis, because he thought that if I tried many things, I could become more talented and outgoing. I used to be an obstinate person. If I firmly believe in one thing, it is hard to change my mind.…

Like a storm, my world has been shaky and damaged, but when it all comes down to it, in the end there will be a clear sky and maybe even a rainbow. Fights, divorce, prison, home, prison, house arrest, and amongst it all, the lies are all a part of my world. Everyone has their own little world, consisting of the people close to and around them, mainly consisting of their family. In my own little world I have my dad, my mom, my Grandma Janet, and my four siblings Erin, Lillian, Stevie, and my half-brother Stetson. The world you come from will affect your dreams and aspirations in a way, but no matter what kind of family you come from, that doesn't have to define you as a person because I have overcome the idea that it has to establish who I…

A week of vacation involved sleeping late, a boat load of candy, and spending time with family and friends. Other than the Reese's cup in my lunch box, the respite was over, because this was the first day back from spring break. The reality of high school came crashing in again. Stella and her evil minions approached me as I slammed my locker shut. “Hey Emily, I think you should know something,” Stella snapped.…
