In the book "If I Ever Get Out of Here" the author Eric Gansworth writes about the dangers of assumptions. He writes about this theme throughout the book by introducing situations in which an assumption of a character or a group, often times based on race, turns out to be incorrect and leads to issues between the two people or groups. Lewis and his family both make assumptions about George's family because he is from off the reservation and there are assumptions made about Indians and Lewis by teachers, classmates, store workers, and more. While Lewis is being bullied by Evan, a kid at his school, many people didn't believe that the situation was as bad as Lewis claimed. When discussing the problem in the lunchroom some of the kids agreed that Lewis is just "making the easy Indian claim" (p. 207).…

However, when we look at Sophocles Antigone, Creon and Antigone possess two separate mindsets on what they believe to be right, and essentially Creon’s stubbornness and the…

Wanda Sykes, in I’ma Be Me, brings up a lot of social problems that she sees happens, but most of what she sees in life is not just conjecture; many of her personal experiences are true, maybe a little exaggerated, but true. For instance, she talks about the smallest complaints people have about the president and what he is doing, or the child she has with her lesbian wife is Caucasian and she can’t pick her up alone without being questioned, or that she has to be asked to not speak in a stereotypical African American lingo. President Obama and his wife, Michelle, often are victims of the media, due to the fact that Obama is the president and society’s highly constructed expectation of a high public figure. Sykes stated that early in Obama’s presidency, there were complaints about Obama for the most menial things and that the complaints were insignificant compared to the other problems that were more in need of his attention. When communicating problems or issues with someone, use the word “I” to describe your own feelings and thoughts. Evaluating others by using the word “you” could result in a defensive reaction from the receiver. This way the receiver of the massage is less likely to feel rejected.
