My grandparents were originally from New Mexico, my grandpa Marcelino was born in a small town called Mora and my grandma Mary was born in an even smaller town called Anton Chico. I am not sure when my grandparents moved to Pueblo, but I do know that they lived in a small house on Elm Street in Bessemer as my grandpa worked as a steelworker for CF&I. In 1962, my grandparents purchased nine acres of land out in the county on Ford Road, where they built a decent sized three-bedroom home with a basement and a five car detached garage for themselves and their seven children. They became farmers and continued to grow their family with 22 grandkids, 37 great grandkids, and six great, great grandkids. Safe to say, I grew up with plenty of aunts, uncles, and cousins around. My parents, Harold and Cynthia Lopez had been just 18 when I was born and three months later they were married. My dad was the youngest of seven, and because my parents were young and my grandparents were aging, we stayed and lived with my grandparents out on that farm for all of my childhood. My father was a railroad worker for Burlington Northern when I was younger, until he was laid off, after that he worked several jobs, whatever he could find here and there, until he passed away at age 37. What I do know is that my great grandparents on my mom’s side immigrated here from Germany and Wales. However, I find that many of my beliefs, which make me who I am, come from my mom’s family. These beliefs come through in the way in which I treat people. My family on my mom’s side are the kindest, most loving, selfless, and generous people I have ever met. They do not have much, but what they do have, they would gladly give to someone else if they needed it. They have taught me how to see the world with unprejudiced eyes, shown me unconditional love, and have always supported me to be who I am and who I want to be.
