“Let Your Feelings Show” comes after. Clever lyrics and a tight beat reminiscent of the Talking Heads energizes the song. The rapidity of the funk guitars was pleasing to listen too. With a fade-out comes one of EWF’s greatest hits, “Boogie Wonderland.” The disco groove remains the classic Earth Wind and Fire beat that makes everybody dance. Combined with unbelievably tight instrumentals and intricate colors, the song will leave you excited to bring your headphones and meticulously study the instrumentation for days. “Star” comes close to the band’s older years of creativity. It does not seem to catch fire. However, it is a good slow song to dance to at the quiet part of a school dance or wedding. The next song, “Rock That!” deviates from the typical funk style while keeping the classic four-on-the-floor groove. “Rock That!” calls for a rock groove spun with the disco groove that reminds us all of Earth, Wind, and Fire. It is also the band’s only instrumental. The amazing brass hits, underlining string melodies, and cool chord progressions make it for a truly unconventional but inspiring work. In 1976, the Swedish group ABBA ravished the world with their hit song “Dancing Queen.” Even after 30 years since its exposition at King Carl Gustaf’s ball, the song remains a favorite in dance clubs. Mixed with pop-operatic harmonies and inspiration to the dance rhythm in George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby," as well as the drumming on Dr. John's 1972 album “Dr. John's Gumbo”, ABBA is able to convey an elated feeling of limitless joy and highlights the greatest music of the disco era. Through a beautifully woven blend of uplifting, empowering lyrics and a sophisticated melody scattered with heart-tugging high notes, “Dancing Queen” celebrates the carefree innocence of youth.…

When Patrick Loggins’ Time Wharp project released the smartly and jazzily constructed “Cole Dub” earlier this year, I had to sit back and notice. “Cole Dub”, like much of Time Wharp’s eponymous debut, toes the line between nightclub and morning commute music - you can hear the conflict in the thumping nocturnal beat mixed with that oily hi hat (which also helps to explain the choice in cover art). “Cole Dub” and the rest of Time Wharp is a very, very nice debut LP from a producer who could - and should - be getting some more recognition soon. The whole album is worth a listen, but “Cole Dub” is the undisputed standout here - there’s even a three-minute track, “Median”, there to provide a buildup for it.…

Case Study of a DJ: James Brown By Alvin Wilson Funky Drummer: There is a section where James Brown, the drummer and the sax come together in a beautiful and interesting manner. This portion of the song is from 3:38-3:56. It has that infectious riff. This portion when looped to create a chorus would surely get the crowd going incessantly. The beginning of the track which had the drummer hitting the rims (rim shot) with the electric guitar intro and the organ joining in later would make for a great intro to any song.…

The sixth song is called “Back in Black” this song starts with the dumber taping the symbols as the melody starts and one of the most famous guitar riffs comes blazing, as this fast pace song gives you a rush of adrenaline. Lyrically is hard to fallow as it sounds like rap and some of the lyrics are hard to understand but what I understand it is about getting back in the rock and roll party life. The seventh song is called “You Shook Me All Night Long” song starts with a guitar melody as it builds up as the song takes off, the lyrics talk about a guy picking up a girl and having a one-night stand, moreover so far this is the memorable and easier song to follow. In today’s world, music drives the entertainment industry like never before, as hit after hit singles top the charts, it is difficult to say “everything that shine ain’t always gonna be gold” (Cudi). Remarkable singles are usually covered out of respect for the original artist, by different performers, in different styles. A lesser known cover artist, Lissie, performed a ground-breaking interpretation of an original single by a rap super star known as Kid Cudi. Although, Kid Cudi and Lissie have unique musical styles that ponder the lines of production size, instrumentals, quality and tone in their rendition of “Pursuit of Happiness”, it is clear Lissie most effectively recorded the piece. Kid Cudi’s album Man on the Moon, produced many singles,…

American guitarist based in Berlin, Kurt Rosenwinkel, closed the second night with his Brazilian-influenced Caipi band whose elements are Pedro Martins on guitar, keyboards and vocals, Olivia Trummer on piano and vocals, Frederico Heliodoro on electric bass and vocals, Antonio Loureiro on drums, vocals and percussion, and Bill Campbell on drums. Happy vibes could be enjoyed right away in “Caipi”, the opening tune, and one of the strongest of the record. “Casio Vanguard” was next, in which the guitarist showed off his towering guitar licks in between vocalized Portuguese phrases. While “Silver Flames” had a tripping disco-like start and no solos, “Know The Answer” infused funky pulses into a pop song adorned with indie touches and catchy choruses.…

The main reason to why psychedelic style of rock became popular was because of its characteristic features such as modal melodies, esoteric lyrics, description of dreams, visions or hallucinations, and longer songs with lengthy instrumental solos. Some of the main features of this particular style of rock consists of the use of “trippy” effects, such as distortion, reverb and reversed, delayed, or shifting phased sounds. Another common distinction from traditional dance music of the time was beat variance, either through an unusual encompassing beat or by disrupting the 4/4 timing with interludes. The song “The Sunshine of Your Love” included, echo and reverberation. It also featured the use of long-delay and multiple-repeat echo effects.…

OutKast, a popular rap group throughout the nineties and early 2000s, has a renowned song entitled “Hey Ya!” which features the smooth flows of Andre 3000 and hard hitting rhymes of Big Boi. The song has been a huge hit for years and is virtually known by every American under the age of thirty. When the song was released in 2003, I was just three years old, but had already adopted my dad’s love for music and I frequented the kitchen tile as my dance floor whenever music was playing. OutKast’s song “Hey Ya!” holds a different weight than most other songs I grew up around because it is one of few memories I remember vividly about my childhood.…
