Hypothyroidism Personal Statement

Decent Essays
Having a mother that immersed herself in learning about health and wellness, and with my work experience in health care, I am always trying to learn about new discoveries or treatments for many diseases like Rhuematoid Arthritis, which I have had for five years and I research about how to best treat Hypothyroidism which I've had for decades. I research vitamins and supplements related to my diseases and many other types of health and wellness issues and I am using a few wellness products that I find are succesful in managing my health issues. To say I'm interested in health and wellness is an understatement.

The goal of any good screenwriter, or any writer really, is to grab the reader's attention and keep it until the end. Your goal for your blog should be exactly the same. From the minute the site visitor hits your landing page, his attention should be captured enough that he doesn't leave for a good long while. Like a good film that leaves you wanting to know more about the characters, view it again, or see the sequel, a good blog will draw in the visitor and make him bookmark your site and sign up for your mailing list.…

Growing up in a health-conscious home, I have always been interested in organic gardening, herbal remedies, and natural approaches to maintaining physical, emotional, and mental health. I want to be a naturopathic physician because I believe that the body is sacred (1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?), and I want to teach people how to heal themselves, avoid unhealthy habits, and prolong good quality of life (1 Cor 3:17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is holy, and you are that temple.). My convictions were strengthened after seeing how my third younger sister (9 years old at the time) battled against dermatomyositis, a rare auto-inflammatory disorder with an incidence of 5.5 cases per…

Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…

As the illustrious John Locke once stated, the human mind at birth is a tabula rasa upon which experience imprints knowledge. It was not until a point in my late childhood that I learned that my grandmother had been suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis ever since I was a little girl. On one particular morning, my grandmother was not able to get up from her bedside. Her joints had become unprecedentedly inflamed, causing her extraordinary pain. It seemed as if she had been temporarily paralyzed as nothing but a tear came down her cheek.…

During elementary school my mother was working toward a masters degree in physical therapy. In preparation for tests and exams any time she caught me in front of the television, in the living room of our apartment, I became a studying tool and test subject. While watching Barney and Elmo reruns, my q-angles were measured and the endpoint of my ACL tested using the Lachman test. I tell you this because growing up in this environment I developed my interest in the human body and medicine. What excites me about this field of study is that it isn’t stagnant.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science. Having exposed myself to…

On January 26 of this year, my mother informed my siblings and I that she had cancer. I remember that day like it was yesterday. The issue that I chose to research and address based on human health was Lupus. People are constantly questioning the causes and effects of Lupus. Seeing if there is a connection between Lupus and the environment is one that many have researched and tested on. “Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic disease of unclear etiology, characterized by an overactive immune system and the production of antibodies that may target normal tissues of many organ systems, including the kidneys. It can arise at any age and occurs mainly in women” (Bernatsky, Fournier, Pineau, Clarke, Vinet & Smariassi, 2011pg 45).…

“Wellness is both a dynamic process of physical, mental, and spiritual optimization and integration and an outcome of that process” (Myers & Sweeney, 2007). The origins of wellness was discovered over 2,000 years ago by the teachings of Panacea and Hygeia. Panacea and Hygeia were the daughters of Aesculapais who was the ancient Greek God of healing. Panacea believed that the support of healing comes through treating existing illnesses. Hygeia was certain that educating positive ways of living helps prevent illness.…

Dating back to the days of reading my Charlie Brown’s ‘Cyclopedia, I’ve always had a bit of a passing interest in health and nutrition. I can still see in my mind the book’s drawings of teeth and bones, d I remember being fascinated with how much was going on beneath the surface, so to speak. This continued through high school. I remember a project where students learned how the breathalyser was used to measure blood alcohol levels and we learned how one body system interacted with another. But it was not until much later that I even considered a career in a health-related field.…
