A college student has been brought into the hospital by her two friends, they claim she has potentially taken ecstasy. Brittany (patient) has several symptoms and shows some evidence of this claim. Taking a blood test and reviewing data shows that she has not taken ecstasy, but is actually suffering from hyponatremia. Hyponatremia occurs when sodium concentrations in the blood become to low. Brittany’s friends state she drank a lot of water to prevent a hangover. This is the main reason for her condition. The best way to fix this is to limit water consumption and to get sodium into the bloodstream with an IV.

The patient Brittany was brought into the hospital by her friends, reporting that she was at a party, acting weird, having trouble waking up and potentially took ecstasy. She has a heart rate of 90 bpm, which falls into a slightly high but still normal heart rate. Her blood pressure is 135/87, similar to her heart rate, it still falls into a high but tolerable amount. A fever is 100.4oF for a human and Brittany’s temperature is slightly under that at 100.2oF, only simple consideration should be put on the temperature unless it increases. Brittany’s Glucose concentration is 72 mg/dl, which is normal. Her Sodium, Potassium, and Chloride levels are all below average at 115, 2.9, and 88 mM/L respectively. These three elements help control your bodies functions and regulate certain systems. Brittany’s O2 and CO2 concentrations are within normal parameters (appendix).
