The hypoglossal nerve is the twelfth (XII) cranial nerve. It is an ipsilateral, predominantly motor nerve. Its functions include tongue movements in relation to swallowing, food manipulation, and speech.
Protocol
To assess the nerve, one can ask an individual to stick their tongue out and observe its position. Resistance can be applied to further test the strength/proper innervation of the tongue. The shape of the tongue at rest can also be an indication of hypoglossal nerve function.
Expected Outcome
If the subject is healthy, when asked to protrude their tongue, the tongue will show no deviations and not be affected by slight resistance. The tongue will also appear flat in the mouth at rest.
