The word Hypocrite was actually originated from the Greek language. Hypocrite comes from the Greek word “hypokrites” which means “actor” or “acting out”. Looking back there were plenty of situations where they played the old “Do as I say, not as I do”. One common example of this is your parents giving you an early bedtime or curfew, but they are able to stay up as long as they like. Another example of this is when you feel like your parents are being so unfair to the point that you start believing they don’t remember what it’s like to be a teenager anymore. At the time a teenager would feel much betrayed by this. Personally I have had a hypocrite experience with my dad when I was a young girl. He was a good man, but had a bit of a potty mouth. He would always tell me to never curse and “It’s not ladylike”, but would curse as if each profanity would add an extra hour to his life. I have always been a good child so I never picked up on that habit and did as my father said. I will admit that it was serious entertainment as a young girl to hear my dad say one thing and do another.
Would you believe it if someone told you that hypocrisy is actually a self-control strategy? Psychologists have argued that we function with a basic principle of “cognitive consistency”. Therefore we constantly seek harmony as humans. What hypocrisy gives to people is a sense of self control that a situation is what they imagine or hope it to be.
