The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby is a book written in 1925 by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it was based on New York City and long island in the 1920s. Fitzgerald uses his novel to tell his experience of the “roaring twenties” and the corruption of the American dream The story tells a man named Jay Gatsby, tries his best to win the love of Daisy, whom is the wife of Tom Buchanan. Successful people want to show that they are more intelligent, powerful than the others. Tom is an excellent example, he always uses his money to ridicule those he dislikes, he believes that he can do everything because he is wealthy. Sadly, it is partly true, Tom won Daisy’s heart using his money, and Gatsby can not win her back no matter how hard he tries. Lower class people may try to avoid this kind of hypocrisy, some will also be jealous, and some will look down to it. Meanwhile the Elites are reluctant to the equality between poor and rich, they go against the poor in different ways. For instance, Tom despises blacks, he said "Civilization is going to pieces" "If we don 't look out the white race will be -- will be utterly submerged" when talking about the book “Colored Empires”. In this kind of relation between rich and poor, it is not surprising that the American dream would be destroyed. People like Gatsby, seem like to become one of the upper class, but they will never truly became one of the “old rich”, and that is why there is a difference between “west egg” and “east egg”. The unbalance, broken thought the rich hold toward the poor was a big reason of why the American dream corrupted because it broke the idea that “no matter where you starts, if you work hard, you can be successful.” The old rich will never accept the new rich as one of them of matter how hard they
