Hypocrisy In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

In Nathaniel Hawthrone’s short story “Young Goodman Brown” the author tells a story of a young man drawn into a meeting with the devil. Brown’s judgment towards the goodness of his town has been dismayed, when he comes to find out many of who are respected in his town such as their religion aspect including his wife are attending the ceremony with the devil. At the end of the story, brown’s notion towards everyone has changed, he’s not able to ever come to look at everyone the same and doesn’t trust them. Brown ends up living dreary days the rest of his life. The main theme in this story is Public vs. Private. The author tells the story to convey to the readers about hypocrisy, who people portray to be, isn’t really who they are. As for Goodman Brown he himself is a hypocrite. He knows exactly who he’s going to meet up with and yet continues onto his journey. Even after his wife Faith tries to prevent him not to go on the journey. Faith fails into convincing him, instead she blesses him, so he could get back home safe. Reading along the story, Brown does show a strong believe in his faith when his response to Faith is strong: This indicates before Brown enters the woods, he knows where exactly his faith stands but regarding to his sinful acts he doesn’t justify. Goodman Brown sets himself into his journey with a strong will, as he felt He believe his faith is so strong that his encounter with the devil will do no harm to him and he’ll return back home untouched by evil. This testifies he’s not such of a good Christin as he speaks
