What is Hypertension? Hypertension is more commonly known as high blood pressure. It is when the force of blood in the arteries stretches the artery wall past maximum capacity. This can result in health problems like heart disease or a stroke. Arteries are tubes that transport blood through the heart which then transfer blood throughout the body. There are two types of hypertension: primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension is the more common of the two. Primary hypertension is high blood pressure that occurs after many years in adults. Secondary hypertension is caused by a different disease or underlying condition. A person with regular blood pressure would read about 120/80mm Hg. Anyone with a blood pressure of 140/90 or higher would be considered to have hypertension. If a person is over 60 years of age, 150/90 is considered hypertension. A person will need immediate treatment if their blood pressure is 180/120 mm Hg or higher.

What causes High Blood Pressure? Hypertension doesn’t have symptoms. People refer to it as the silent killer because of it. If someone doesn’t know they have it, it can be dangerous and even life threatening. It can lead to many diseases such as: heart disease, stroke, eye problems, kidney failure and more.
