Hypertension At Walmart

I decided to pick the 65 year old woman with hypertension. At Walmart, I was able to buy everything included in my meal plan and still have 19 dollars remaining. Having an illness, and being older in age plays a drastic role in eating habits, which is why a lot of snacks were not purchased. Most of the foods that were purchased were either fruits, vegetables, or canned goods. The meal plans were made with the illness in mind, and how certain foods could be more harmful than helpful. The items that were purchased at Walmart, were also the Great Value brand instead of name brand items. Purchasing the name brand items were more costly, and they also have the same ingredients. Walmart is a reasonable grocery store for most items, but some of the …show more content…
As a 65- year-old woman with hypertension, there are many foods that were avoided which were in the convenience store. Many of the things within my meal plan had to be revised once I went to the convenience store. For example, for lunch I wanted to make my own turkey sandwich but Quiktrip did not have packages of meat, or cheese. Instead, of having these items Quiktrip only had pre-packed sandwiches. Mayo at Walmart cost $1.29 while Mayo at Quiktrip cost $4.39 but both were the same size. Quiktrip also lacked having fresh vegetables, and had a small section of fresh fruits. Some of the “fresh fruits” (fruit bowls, cups, and etc.) did not look so fresh, and should have been thrown away. While making the decisions at QuikTrip, it was difficult to stay on the budget because the prices for things were extremely more costly than it was in the grocery store. On the last day, due to limited funds I was only able to purchase some nuts, and crackers for dinner due to not having sufficient funds to get an entire meal. There were only two types of vegetables within the entire convenience store which was a small can of green beans and corn. I also noticed that there were no fresh vegetables within the store, and the only fresh fruits were apples, oranges and bananas. Attempting to find healthy foods, and keeping the illness …show more content…
Most communities have more convenience stores than full service grocery stores which could lead to more citizens purchasing items from the convenience store. Although the convenience store does not have fruits, and vegetables many parents/guardians are not concerned about providing daily servings of fruits and vegetables but rather their family simply having a meal for that night. Without having the necessary transportation to go to the full service grocery store which possibly could be thirty minutes away families settle for the convenience store. At the convenience store they are more likely to purchase a pre packaged sandwich, chips, and other junk foods that are not healthy. The lack of transportation also means lack of healthy foods which lead to obesity, malnutrition, and other

A short walk over to McDonald's reveals an assortment of food ranging from fruit parfaits to Big Macs, all costing between one and six dollars in price. If I were to buy a Bacon ClubHouse Burger, it would run me around six dollars. That burger contains 740 calories (37% of federally recommended levels), 46 grams of fat (64% of recommended levels), and 1480 milligrams of salt (62% of recommended levels). Pair that with a large soda and my bill runs about eight dollars. For the same amount of money I could walk over to Haggens and buy a pound of salmon, a bag of grapes, and pound of apples.…

The Supermarket “Prime Real Estate” describes how Marion Nestle is explaining to her readers how supermarkets and grocery stores all around the world manipulate shoppers into impulse buying items that are not necessary needs. In her essay “The Supermarket: Prime Real Estate,” she shows how much research has been done to have stores design to the correct layout so their customers spend more money than they intended. Also, it describes how researchers have conducted studies to prove that the placement of items (typically junk food) in the store, will sell more if put in a designated area where people will be able to notice it them, or walk right by it. Although, Nestle mentions the responsibility of customers to shop healthy, the author argues…

It is common for individuals in low income, minority communities, especially those that are a food desert, to not have their own car. Therefore, if the only source of healthy food is within the large supermarkets that are located at a distance and the smaller neighborhood grocery stores close, the “consequence of poor supermarket access is that residents have increased exposure to energy-dense food (‘empty calorie’ food) readily available at convenience stores and fast-food restaurants” (Walker, Keane & Burke,…
