Hyperemesis Gravidarum
Definition:
• Also known as morning sickness; Extreme, excessive, and persistent vomiting in early pregnancy that may lead to dehydration and malnutrition. It is associated with weight loss of more than five percent of the woman’s pregnancy weight. It affects about one in every 300 pregnant women. It is most common in first pregnancies, women carrying multiple fetuses and young women. It usually desolves itself by the 20th week of gestation.
Cause:
• The body produces large amounts of HCG at a rapid rate early in pregnancy and has a connection with hyperemesis gravidarium. HCG is a hormone created during pregnancy by the placenta.
Risk Factors:
• Having a history of hyperemesis gravidarum
• Being overweight
• Pregnancy
