Newborn jaundice threatens the health and well-being of newborns and is again being reported in hospitals around the country (Seagraves, Brulte, McNeely, & Pritham, 2013). Hyperbilirubinemia is the most common reason for hospital readmission of term and late preterm newborns, and remains a concern for both families and health care providers (Seagraves, Brulte, McNeely, & Pritham, 2013). The health of the infant can shift depending on the effectiveness of the teaching and the ability of the mother to be receptive of the information given by the nurse. In the PICOT question we want to find out the effects breastfeeding support have on lowering the jaundice level in newborns after discharge. If the mother is not receptive to the teaching or practicing health promoting behaviors the infant’s bilirubin levels could rise and cause a readmission. Jaundice can be dangerous if the levels of bilirubin in the blood get to high. Phototherapy and other interventions might need to be implemented to decrease levels and improve health. Nurses should always be an advocate for their patient and provide the best care possible. The health promotion model is based on encouraging patients or in this case the mother of the infant to choose healthy options for the infant. As a nurse, being a teacher is a one of the key roles in influencing your patients to choose the best choices. The role of nursing is collaboration among patients, families, and communities to create the best conditions for the expression of optimal health and high-level well-being (Nola Pender-Nursing Theory, 2016). Nurses should always encourage mothers to breastfeed as often as the infant would like, especially in the first few weeks of life when jaundice is such a high risk factor. A nurse needs to be passionate and caring when promoting these healthy behaviors. The patient should always feel as though their best interest is in mind when healthcare professionals are providing care and education. As a nurse, it is their duty to the patient to provide beneficial education and promote a healthy style that agrees with what the patients wants to achieve with their plan of
