Hydroelectric energy is utilized for many aspects of our daily life due to the huge amount of consumption required for things such as using an outlet. Hydroelectric energy is electricity produced by hydropower, which means it uses the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. However, there is debate regarding the reliability of hydroelectric energy as a renewable energy source since some organizations believe hydroelectric energy is actually doing more harm than good. These organizations say that hydroelectric energy is increasing global warming faster than fossil fuels and therefore should not be used as a main source. On the other hand, the National Hydropower Association (NHA) is a nonprofit organization …show more content…
In Network, Collaborate, Compose it states that pathos is an appeal to emotion similar to empathy, which “pertains to the experience of our sensitivity toward emotion.” (Langbehn 18). In the first image, the emotions that are dealt with are originally provoked by the small images on the left side of the home and the workers. This appeals to the needs of the public such as homes and jobs to support the family household. As was mentioned earlier, the statement that hydroelectric energy can create “+1.4 MILLION JOBS” is used to formulate the connection between hydroelectric energy and creation of jobs (Navigant Consulting Inc.). In the second image, the use of pathos is more explicitly seen as the image is more of a visual representation of how hydroelectric energy is reliable, thus provoking more emotion from the viewer. The diction that is used in “Hydro is there when we need it,” takes advantage of the fact that people desire instant gratification. This message of reliability reinforces the message that NHA is promoting for the concept that the power of hydro is a never-ending loop. The background of the dam is another use of pathos for emotions that can come with the fact that water is something that people encounter daily that is also powerful enough to sustain living communities with energy. The NHA gathers the public support through the use of pathos because …show more content…
The use of the rhetorical appeals was effective in bringing the awareness for public support. Other organizations attempt to show the consequences that hydroelectric power creates, like in regards to global warming and stating that hydroelectric energy in comparison is not a reliable energy source. In order for NHA to counterattack the beliefs formed from other organizations, was crucial that the images offer concrete information. NHA articulates the benefits and reliability of hydroelectric energy to the public through the usage of the rhetorical appeals within the
