Hydra is the largest constellation recognized by the International Astronomical Union, it stretches from the south end of Caner to in between Libra, Centaurus and the Scales. I like Hydra because even though it is such a huge constellation, there isn't a prominent identifier, but when you do see it, it demands to be admired and you can't forget that it's there. In Chinese astronomy, Hydra contains three constellations within itself; Liu, Xing and Zhang.

The myth behind Hydra ties into the myth of Hercules. Hydra was the second task of Hercules' labors, Hercules rode into the Hydra's lair and lured it out in order to battle it. Hercules and the Hydra were wrestling when a crab climbed out of the mud and grabbed ahold of Hercules' leg

The Hydra did this for Medusa for hundreds of years, traveling with her to visit Pandora and Aphrodite and protect the three girls while they caught up in the sanctuary of their homes, protecting Medusa in while she slept, showered, ate, wrote, and researched if it was possible to reverse her powers so she could live a normal life and finally move out of her isolated cave and into a house in a village near the ocean. One night when Hydra and Medusa returned home from a trip to Pandora's they both fell into a deep sleep, and a warrior came into the cave and killed Hydra before attempting to kill Medusa, but Medusa heard the swing of his blade and the short scream that left Hydra and killed the warrior. Medusa would be so heartbroken that her loyal pet and friend was gone that she'd take Hydra's body to the top of the highest mountain and burn her body, and the smoke would carry Hydra's spirit into the heavens, creating a constellation in her

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

My favorite constellation is the Cetus or 'whale' because I think it looks more like a frying pan than a whale. The Cetus is a constellation made up of 88 stars and the brightest star is called Deneb Kaitos. The Cetus is very close to the other zodiac constellations such as Aries, Pisces and Aquarius. The creation story of the Cetus constellation stems from Greek mythology. In this story the Cetus is called a Sea Monster and not a whale.…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…

In this essay I will be looking at the strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson in January 1886. In this novella a well-respected Dr Jekyll struggles with his dual nature and the undesirable reputation of his pleasures in an upper-class Victorian society. I will explore the ways that the author, Robert Louis Stevenson, presents different types of power and its effect over man. I will compare this text to themes of power in poems such as Medusa, My Last Duchess and Hitcher. The first poem Medusa by Carol Ann Duffy shows the cause an outburst of range as anger has power over any sense of morality that that person may have.…
