General background of the study
It is scientifically proven that carbon and greenhouse gas emissions increase the speed of global warming and climate change (Commission, 2016) . Many different actions should be done to slow down this phenomenon and provide a healthy and not damaged planet to the future generations (House, 2013). Provided the above statement, a sustainable way of living is proposed; one which can provide a safe and clean planet to the future generations. Therefore, many scientific and political groups worldwide took the initiative to reduce greenhouse and carbon emissions by setting certain targets and deadlines. Going one step further they developed the concept of electric cars and hybrid electric cars. Electric cars, have only electric motors along with a battery on their chassis and they only use electric energy for their function. They can even get recharged from a specialised electric plug and have a certain mileage autonomy before they need recharging. On the other hand, hybrid electric vehicles (HVEs) implement both a gas engine and an electric engine with a battery on their chassis. This offers them the significant advantage of a very high autonomy compared to the conventional gas engine cars. Hybrid Electric Vehicles take advantage of both the chemical energy imposed to the gas engine from the fuel and the electrical energy provided to the electrical motor from the batteries. In addition to that, the feature of Regenerative Braking system could enhance their mileage autonomy by producing and storing additional energy to the vehicle’s battery. This additional energy is produced by the friction created when the vehicle brakes and breaking disc and wheel pads are touching each other. Thus, the Regenerative Braking System can be more efficiently employed in the city environment which is full of traffic lights and the vehicle must stop very frequently. Importantly it should be mentioned that HVEs acquire a lot of future potential and can be an efficient solution to the reduction of fuel consumption and a breakthrough advancement in automobile industry in the coming
