The devastating failure of the Hyatt Regency Walkway was an important lesson in communication for engineers. Studying what mistakes the structural engineer made that led to the failure of the walkway created new standards for safety and communication to prevent negligence and misconduct in the practice of engineering. This begs the question how has the failure of the design changed the way engineering ethics sets the standard for safety and communication? Jack Gillum’s, the structural engineer, mistakes have impacted the way engineering is practiced today; regarding safety, communication, and responsibility, thus leading to encouraging proper practices of the Code of Ethics and effective communication to prevent future failures.
The disregard for safety that was practiced by the lead engineer was one of the root causes of the Hyatt Regency disaster. The engineers that were hired to take care of “all structural engineering services for a 750-room hotel projected located at 2345 McGee Street, Kansas City, Missouri." Many issues were settled in court where. During the project Gillum oversaw the design, he let his team do work by themselves that should have been overlooked by someone more experienced. The APEGBC Code of ethics states that “undertake and accept responsibility for professional assignments only when qualified by training or experience.” (APEGBC, 2017) The engineers working with Jack Gillum’s firm should not have undertaken the project as they did not follow engineering standards.
