During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, Hutu extremists sought to kill all Tutsis after the Tutsi rebels shot down the president’s plane. Nearly a million Tutsis were murdered during the genocide. Hutus were ordered to cleanse Rwanda of all Tutsis by the Rwandan government. Hutus used machine guns, machetes, and grenades to clear Rwanda of Tutsis. Hutus also raped and transmitted HIV to dehumanization and strip women of their dignity.…
After the Holocaust, the world had promised that they would “never again let anything like this happen.” In the spring of 1994, all hell broke loose as one million people died in the Rwandan Genocide. What happened to the promise to never let another genocide occur again Racism, competition of land between Hutu and Tutsi, and denying the situation in Rwanda as genocide, the killings occurred and continued for 100 long days. However, that all happened because of European colonization in Africa. Doc 1, by Gerard Prunier, states how the Belgians divided Rwanda people based on physical features.…
In attempt to comprehend the acts of Hutus murdering the Tutsi, one must understand that two populations, at various points in the past, had conflicts with one another, one of which led to a smaller mass murdering of Tutsi 1959. The two groups had for many years been pitted against each other with fears of control and social status. In the beginning, the Tutsi monarchy controlled the government of the dependent Rwanda. In 1959, the last of the Tutsi monarchy died and the government was controlled by a combined leadership of Hutu and Tutsi leaders. However, in 1962 the time of Rwandan independence, the Hutu leaders put their developed social movement in action to secure all governmental power and forced the Tutsi out of all government positions.…
When asked this question, one has to go back to the time of 1962. 1962 was the time when Rwanda became independent and the Hutus were able to gain political control (Payne 196). The Tutsis challenged the Hutus political power in the 1990’s. To regain a sense of stability, some Hutus agreed to share power with the Tutsis. Angered by this, “Hutu extremists responded by killing both Tutsis and moderate Hutus” (Payne 196).…
After reports of the genocide had spread across the globe, the United Nations embraced its role as a global peace force and created a commission of experts to investigate and review the situation in Rwanda. By October of 1994, the commission provided “undeniable and overwhelming evidence that actions against the Tutsi constituted genocide.” With the concurrence of the Rwandan government, the United Nations adopted Resolution 955, which ICTR, acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. Chapter VII grants the power to “determine the existence of any threat to peace, breach of peace, or act of aggression.” In addition, it gives the Security Council the power to “restore international peace and security,” but does not specify any…

In 1994, the world witnessed one of the most horrific genocides in recent memory. As reported by the BBC, in the small African country of Rwanda, the conflict between two ethnic groups, the Hutus and the Tutsis, had been brewing for decades but throughout the colonial period, tensions rose substantially, ultimately ending in the bloody massacre now known as the genocide against the Tutsi. Belgian colonizers, who deemed the Tutsis to be preferable to the Hutus, created an even stronger divide by issuing ethnic identification cards and giving preferential treatment to the Tutsis. After Rwandan independence, the Hutus rose to power, proceeding to marginalize their adversaries and punish them for their years of Belgian favor.2 Finally, after nearly a century of build up, the war erupted after Hutu President Juvenal Habarimana’s plane was shot down on April 6, 1993.…

The Rwandan Genocide When Belgium conquered Rwanda, they spit the citizens into different groups. Split up into three groups, the Tutsis, Hutus, and the Twa, the Belgians gave the Tutsis more power and believed they were superior. Right before Rwanda gained independence, the Belgians began giving the Hutus more and more power. When Rwanda gained independence in 1962, it left these made up ethnic groups in tension.…
Rodrigo Perez-Campos Ms.Davies English 10 Block 1 2 April 2018 Rwanda 1990 There were two groups in Rwanda that did not get along at all. Throughout life, major events that occur are often a result of a series of built up incidents and a single action taken place can cause immense devastation, yet reversible. Genocide is officially defined by the United Nations as committing an act with the “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group...” the Rwandan Genocide exemplifies this perfectly. The tension between the majority Hutus and minority Tutsis who are the two most common ethnic groups in Rwanda derived from the German and Belgian colonization. After colonization, the two groups were divided, and the Tutsis obtained more power.…
When they began to throw grenades into the terrified throng, 8-year-old Marlene Maniraho scurried for her life, meeting a young mother and her child as they fled into nearby undergrowth. Both had lost limbs, but the militia soon caught up with them. Marlene was forced to watch as her beloved brother was hacked to death with machetes. The young mother and child later shared the same fate” (Wallis). Over the course of 3 months, Hutu militants mercilessly slaughtered 800,000 to 1 million Tutsi’s in Rwanda and neighboring countries.…
The failure of the UN to act upon the reports of genocide in Rwanda caused an innumerable amounts of killing and anarchy. The problems started with the Belgium’s discrimination between the two populations. Going as far as to hire scientists to prove the Tutsi superiority, they only enabled the already present racism between the two groups. Then the Hutu population decided to act. After the president was shot down, supposedly by Hutu extremists, the anarchy began.…
“A genocide that is when an ethnic group wants to bury another ethnic group. Genocide goes beyond War, because the intention lasts forever”( Hatzfeld 107). On April 6, 1994, a plane carrying the Hutu President, Juvenal Habyarimana, sparked one of the greatest atrocities that mankind knows today as the Rwandan Genocide. A modern genocide that contained unimaginable techniques and foreshadowed events that could have been prevented by The West. The majority ethnic group, Hutus, slaughtered thousands of minority, Tutsis, and any Hutu moderates due to vengeance of the events leading up to the Presidential plane crash.…
Causes and Effects of the Rwandan Genocide The word ‘genocide’ originates from the Greek word ‘genos’ meaning tribe or race, and the Latin word ‘cide’ meaning killing (Cook 4). The Rwandan Genocide stands one of the worst massacres of its kind and one of the bloodiest wars in the history of the world (Cook 88). The genocide predominantly involved the slaying of the people of the Tutsi ethnic tribe. In just one hundred days, an approximately 800,000 Tutsis had been killed by the people of the Hutu ethnic tribe (Barnett 4).…
