Wink helps Hushpuppy to escape from the life that she feels restrains and get back to Bathtub where she feels belonged. In the city, Wink decides to not come along with the others back to Bathtub, and his action of sacrificing himself for others’ benefits stimulates Hushpuppy to be willing to sacrifice herself for the good of the community when she becomes the leader of Bathtub. - The woman who Hushpuppy thinks is her mother cooks alligator meat for Hushpuppy and tells her to stay strong and be brave even when she is alone. Her words make Hushpuppy understand that there is no need for her to find her mother, and she can live well and take good care of her father as long as she is strong and brave. - The man in the boat keeps the wrappers of chicken rolls he eats each time and tells Hushpuppy that the wrappers remind him of who he is. This man’s experience teaches Hushpuppy to never waste time and also to be brave enough to do things that she wants to do, even though that means to break her routine.
- After seeing things don’t work out well even after the explosion, Hushpuppy realizes that sometimes things in nature can be so wrong that the nature itself can’t fix it. It requires someone to stand up and lead people to fix the problem. Hushpuppy realizes that she is supposed to be that leading
