Is Love Sincere Between the Husband and Wife in “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin? Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” is a short story about the horrible event that takes place over an hour's time in the life of Mrs. Louise Mallard. Mrs. Mallard is given the horrible news that her husband, Mr. Brently Mallard, has died as a result of a train wreck. “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance. She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms.” (Chopin 1) Is this the usual behavior of a woman who sincerely loves her husband and just learned of his death? Mallard is a woman that struggles through her life with physical and emotional afflictions. One affliction is that she has “heart trouble.” (Chopin 1) A medical condition that her family and friends are aware of. This medical condition could cause her heart to fail and possibly die in times of extreme physical and emotional distress. “It was her sister Josephine who told her, in broken sentences; veiled hints that revealed in half concealing.” (Chopin 1) Josephine was very careful to gently break the news of Brently Mallard’s death to her sister because she knew it could break her heart and possibly kill her. Her emotional grief was seen by her sister and Mr. Richards in one brief moment and then it was over. Louise’s emotional state begins to change as she quietly leaves the room.
