In recent centuries, global temperatures have been rising due to the increased amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Scientists have been studying climate change in order to better understand human impact on it and what we need to change. One of the biggest factors in climate is the ocean currents. They help to determine how water and air move around the world: where it goes, what temperature it is, how much nutrients is in the water, etc. However, scientists have only recently begun to consider if and how hurricanes may affect climate. Scientists now believe that hurricanes may play a significant role in moderating the Earth’s climate. Rather than just being seemingly random natural disasters, hurricanes may be instrumental in moderating the climate. By analyzing climate and hurricane data over several decades, scientists have observed the correlation between rising surface sea water temperatures and the power of hurricanes, but they believe there may be a deeper connection between hurricanes and climate. In order to better understand hurricanes, scientists use model to simulate them. For one, they know the raw fuel of hurricanes in warm seawater. The evaporation of warm water and eventual latent heat release creates strong winds which pick up more water and becomes a positive feedback loop. This allows for a hurricane to reach Category 5. However, most hurricanes do not reach the Category 5 stage. This is due to the fact that most of them cannot get up to speed because of the friction created by sea spray. Scientists do not quite understand how this works, but they are working to see what happens with sea spray during a hurricane. This explains a lot of how hurricanes themselves work, but not how hurricanes potentially affected
