Hurricane Sandy was the most devastating superstorm of the 2012 hurricane season. The massive storm killed over 280 people, affected millions, and cost $100 billion of damage to the United States alone. Sandy was the worst storm of the year, and its tolls were high. The storm was so detrimental due to its magnitude, the damage inflicted upon the United States, and the massive effect on a worldwide scale. What started as a tropical wave on October 22, 2012 developed into a Category 1 hurricane that altered life for millions of people, being not only physically destructive, but economically as well. On October 24, 2012, the waves made landfall for the first time, hitting Jamaica. Sixty-five people were killed across the Caribbean alone. "Authorities in the Dominican Republic said the storm destroyed several bridges and isolated at least 130 communities while damaging an estimated 3500 homes" (web.archive.org) (n.d.). The Grand Bahamas' airport needed to be rebuilt due to Sandy, and Haiti received 3 days of nonstop rain. Millions of people were affected worldwide, from the United States and the Bahamas to Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. The country was hit by the storm for the first time on October 29 in New Jersey. Sandy then fell upon New York, and went on to affect 24 states overall. The destruction was unbelievable. According to LiveScience.com (2012), "Sandy will end up causing about $20 billion in property damage and $10 billion to $30 billion more in lost business, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in the United States". As stated by CNN.com (n.d.), on October 26, 2012, North Carolina, Washington, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland all declared "a state of emergency," and on November 9, "gas rationing begins in New York City and Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.” Hundreds of highways and roads flooded across the country, and thousands of flights were cancelled. The hurricane even affected the 2012 presidential election. "The Obama and Romney campaigns have cancelled or changed 20 events between them due to the storm and safety concerns" (alternet.org) (2012). New York's 3 main airports were shut down for 2 days. There was no trading on Wall Street for two days also, an event which had not occurred since 1888. The state’s subway systems were hit with the worst damage in their 108 years of operation.
