1. When looking at the hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin for the years 1997 and 2005, the most intense storm was Hurricane Wilma that occurred in 2005. Hurricane Wilma was a Category 5 hurricane with wind speeds up to 160 kt (knots) or about 184 mph. Meanwhile, Hurricane Erika in 1997 was a Category 3 hurricane that reached a maximum wind speed of 110 kt or about 127 mph. Hurricanes have very low pressures, so the lower the pressure, the more intense the storm. Wilma’s lowest pressure was 882 millibars (mb) compared to Erika’s lowest pressure of 946 mb. This means that Hurricane Wilma was the most intense storm for the years 1997 and 2005.
2. Hurricane Erika had the longest track. The reason is that Hurricane Wilma traveled over land in Florida, which made it lose strength because the large moisture flux available from the warm ocean surface is absent. Also, Hurricane Erika’s duration was seventeen days compared to Hurricane Wilma’s eleven-day period. Hurricane Erika thus had more time create a longer track than Wilma. By looking at the maps, we can see that Hurricane Wilma quickly loses intensity after traveling north along the eastern coast of the United States.
