Natural Disasters: Hurricane Maria
Introduction
Motivator: In September 2017- October 2017 a massive hurricane called Maria hits the coasts of Puerto Rico. Hurricane Maria is known for one of the top ten worst hurricane that has been record worldwide. It was the strongest storm that has hit Puerto Rico in 80 years. Hurricane Maria was on category five and left more than $40 billion in damage. Some results of this hurricane was millions of houses left without water and electricity. Thesis Statement and Blueprint: Hurricane Maria was a destructive hurricane that caused a great deal of property damage, injuries, and deaths.
Property Damage
Hurricane Maria is one of the strongest Hurricanes that has hit the Puerto Rico in years. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria hits the coasts of Puerto Rico. This Hurricane left Puerto Rico without electricity. Its citizens were without light during days. After Hurricane Maria was over, several people were left without homes. Thousands of homes were destroyed. “When Hurricane Maria came, Peña’s home of 22 years was battered. The zinc roof blew off and wind-driven rain poured into the interior for hours, soaking her belongings, her clothes, her bed. It flowed downstairs to her kitchen, where the water ruined her pressed-wood cabinets and the new stove and oven on which she cooked big meals to supplement her retirement income.” (Viglucci, 1).
Furthermore, Maria left Puerto Rico without a main bridge. “The bridge was the only way to get where people need to go” says Ricardo, Arduengo. After Hurricane Maria was over Puerto Ricans had a lot of things to do. Over 70,000 homes were left without electricity. 50,000 houses did not had access to safe drinkable water.
