Hurricane Katrina was the United States worst natural disaster in history. On August 25, 2005 the storm came ashore to Florida as a category 1 and as the storm continued Katrina gained strength before slamming into the Gulf coast as a category 5 on August 29. Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005 as a tropical depression. In the center of tropical depression wind speeds are between 23 miles per hour to 39 miles per hour. By the time Hurricane Katrina hit Florida it was a category 1 and it caused lots of flooding and caused two casualties. A category 1 is when wind speeds reach between 74 and 95 miles per hour which means that there will be flooding and there will be minor pier damages. After passing the hurricane weakened and was just a tropical storm.
Hurricane Katrina rapidly gained strength and was known as a hurricane again when it hit the Gulf of Mexico on August 26. The mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin, ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city on August 28. But not all people were able to evacuate due to not having enough money to leave or they did not have the resources to leave. On August 28 Hurricane Katrina became a category 5 storm and winds reached up to 175 miles per hour. After that happened the hurricane came to end, Groover said if the Hurricane Katrina was one hour longer she does not think she would have made it. They rushed out of the room they were in and phones were ringing and it was people that were stranded and trapped.
