Despite the urge and pleas for citizens to move to inland shelters, many ignored and chose not to leave their homes. The storm crashed into the peninsula on October 4th, rendering thousands of people helpless and stranded without reach of the shelters. As to date, the number of dead is around 900 with the number rising amidst the clean up efforts. A country with deep economic suppression, Haiti ranks 163 of 186 countries, according to the 2016 United Nations Human Development Index. The staggering number come in part due to the recent natural disasters which has left the impoverished region without power or even forest for wood.
