Hurricane Davidson Observation

My visit to Davidson’s campus was during Hurricane Joaquin. While the hurricane did no real damage to Davidson, it made for a cold, wet and potentially dreary weekend. My initial reaction was that “if I like this campus at its worst, then I’ll love it at its best”. My goal for the weekend visit as to better understand Davidson as a school and to meet Coach Willis and the Wildcat volleyball team. The agenda was full of activities including auditing a history class, watching volleyball matches and practice sessions, and unstructured time with the players (and other students) helping me better appreciate the expectations of a student-athlete at Davidson.

When I started looking at schools my list of “wants” was simple. Small classes, a strong

In Dave Galehouse’s article “Why College Athletes Do Not Succeed”, he states that “Student-athletes don’t realize the time and effort commitment that they are getting involved in and the sacrifices they are going to make. After classes and practices, student athletes are left with very little free time to do school work and be social with their friends” (Galehouse). It might appear to make someone more well-rounded, but it is not always apparent the amount of stress and fatigue that come with it. Jackson Van Arsdale gives a first person perspective of the difficulties associated with being a college athlete in his article “The Life of a Student Athlete”, he stated “ You are not only behind the rest of the class, but you are on the road. You have to teach yourself the missed material from the back of a bumpy bus, an airplane, or in the computer room of the hotel” (Van Arsdale).…

Views From Moore Gym It was around 7:30 Friday night, when myself and four of my friends escaped the rafts of hurricane Joaquin, through the back emergency doors of the historic Moore Gymnasium. All of five of us despite the inclimate weather, were dressed for the cool fall temperatures for the first time this year. As we entered the gym, the sound of Aggie fans cheering for the Lady Aggie Volleyball team, filled my ears. This was my first time being in Moore Gym, which meant observation was natural.…

Goals and Expectations for My Time At Castleton and Beyond Castleton is the perfect environment for me to exercise and apply the ideas expressed in Zakaria’s book, In Defense of a Liberal Education. After reading the assigned book this summer I found that I gained a new understanding of how schools are run, from elementary to higher education. Throughout my time in high school I experienced an ever growing curiosity as I was being exposed to new ideas by both my teachers and my peers, but not being thoroughly taught about these new subjects. Castleton is where I hope to gain the ability to explore these curiosities I’ve acquired more effectively both in and out of the classroom. I was never quite sure what it meant to go to a liberal arts…

Juilliard is a highly prestigious school for music of all kinds. After researching this school, I have learned that academic scores are not important and that people of all ages can attend this school. The main importance for attending Juilliard is the audition where one will perform and be selected based on their talent. The school seems fantastic to me due to its extremely low acceptance rate which would offer closeness within the students attending the school. I prefer to go to schools with a smaller number of people because it offers more availability for instructers to get to know and help their students.…

For my in school Community Service hours I continued more of the Mustang events. The events that I used for my Community Service hours were the Homecoming Football Game, the Breast Cancer Walk, and Trunk or Treat. The Homecoming Game was the first football game I’ve been too since I was in high school, which in my opinion is quite sad. I was able to show my school spirit at an event I’ve never been to before, and the football team surprisingly won. Two things that I learned from this game were that, I do not understand football as much as I thought I did and that football games can actually be enjoyable.…

Reading a landscape is far more complicated than just observing landmarks. There are many different approaches to learning more about a culture through their landscape and Peirce Lewis provides multiple axioms to facilitate this learning. One of Peirce Lewis’s axioms is the axiom of landscape obscurity. This axiom states that most objects in a landscape convey a message, just not in an obvious manner. In order to better understand the landscape it is necessary to create the simple habit of asking questions about the objects that make up the landscape.…
