Hurontario LRT Case Study

The design of the Hurontario LRT involves 23 kilometers of new dedicated rapid transit from Port Credit Go Station in Mississauga to Gateway Terminal (Steeles Avenue) in Brampton (Infrastructure Ontario, n.d.). The project includes the construction of stations, shaft tunnel, tracks, overhead sign structures and related infrastructure facilities (Infrastructure Ontario, n.d.). There will be a total of 22 surface stops along the line that will serve, two urban growth centers, two Go Transit Rail lines, three mobility hubs and several stops with Mississauga and Brampton transit (Infrastructure Ontario, n.d.). At highway 407 a maintenance and storage facility will be built for the light rail vehicles to ensure that the system is always operating at the desired target (Infrastructure Ontario, …show more content…
The design of the system also will focus on improving the land use pattern by implementing development policies along the corridor to influence the city’s form. This is important as public infrastructure specifically transportation will dictate what development path a city adopts. In this case, the implementation of a LRT will encourage a compact mixed used corridor with both high density residential and commercial development that is highly accessible. This will discourage sprawl along with the externalities associated with it. The physical design of the Hurontario LRT system is an example of best practice as its design revolves around solving a specific problem. The system is designed to provide a reliable mode of transportation in terms of travel time and reduce traffic congestion which is done by providing a system that operates in its own designated lane.
