Hunting: What Is The Economic Case Against Trophy Hunting?

Improved Essays
Ahmed describes the economic case against trophy hunting. It is argued that putting a price on animals such as lions, rhinos, and will help an area to preserve that animals population. Many people claim that trophy hunting is a multi million dollar a year enterprise. However, it’s much smaller than that, only 3% of revenue from trophy hunting goes to community development, and trophy hunting only accounts for 2% of tourist related attractions. Many sub-Saharan African countries now have a ban on trophy hunting, yet others allow “canned hunting” in which big game animals are bred to be hunted.“If you’re just giving money to kill an animal, it doesn’t make you a conservationist,” Jeffrey Flocken of the International Fund for Animal Welfare says.

Alessandra Potenza, a writer for New York Times Upfront magazine, sheds light onto the seriousness of Poachers. Poachers, also known as “Trophy Hunters”, are causing the endangered species problem to become worse, specifically African wildlife. An example of this happening is with Cecil (a lion, also a popular tourist attraction) didn’t attack the Trophy Hunters when they shot him with a crossbow but instead ran away; the Trophy Hunters tracked him down and killed 2 days later. If bear - hunting occurs more often than it should, human civilization may collapse due to the crippling economy of the depletion of necessary resources. First, the reason of why I think bear - hunting should be illegal is because bears critical part in the forestial…

Trophy hunting has led to the successful conservation of wildlife in southern African countries in both communally owned and privately owned lands. Hunting wildlife for sport allows communities and private owners to protect biodiversity, because they are assured of generating income from tourists when the latter are selectively authorized to hunt some species of animals (Lindsey et al. 2006). Insufficient funds can often hamper the quest to conserve biodiversity, and ecotourism alone does not generate enough income to sustain communally and privately owned parks. The emergence of trophy hunting in this sense has become profitable, specifically in Africa, where tourists selectively hunt game for sport and pay a significant amount for doing so (Lindsey et al. 2007).…
