Hunting is the killing of animals, while murder is the killing of humans. Why do people hunt? To many people, hunting is a way to "get in touch" with their ancestors. Others are hunters for survival. For example, if someone hunts and kills a buffalo, they can use the animal's hide, bones, and meat for essential items. On the other hand, why do people commit murder? Murder is used for vengeance or for personal gain. Often, murderers kill for the feeling of power and superiority. Hunting is legal, morally correct, and pragmatic, while murder is illegal, morally wrong, and serves no useful purpose. First, hunting and murder are different due to the law's treatment of each. "The central theme of the law of homicide is the unique value of human life... Homicide is the killing of a human being by another human being"(Weinreb and Kahan). Murder has always been a crime in this country. It is one of the worst crimes a person can commit. The penalty for homicide can be a life sentence to prison or even the death penalty. In contrast, hunting is socially acceptable and legal in the United States. So long as one follows all of the regulations and hunts the mammalian only in it's season, then there are no penalties or punishments for hunting. However, if a sportsman were to ignore the regulations, he could be fined. Even if he that happened, the punishment still wouldn't be nearly as bad the punishment for murder. Overall, the law harshly punishes murder, but provides no punishment for legal hunting. Second, murder and hunting are distinct due to moral, which are often religious, reasons. In Christianity, which is a major religion in the United States, murder is a direct violation of the Ten Commandments, which are the rules Christians live by. Meanwhile, the Bible states that God placed all of the animals and plants on this earth for people to eat. To illustrate this point, while blessing Noah and his children, God said: Every creature that is alive shall be yours to eat; I give them all to you as I did the green plants. Also, many people around the world still rely on hunting for their basic needs. Our ancestors have hunted for thousands of years and roughly 20 million people in North America still hunt. Most hunters respect animals and make sure they hunt fairly and give the animals dignity and respect. In contrast, murderers don't value human life. Murder is committed for many different reasons. These include violent and aggressive reasons, desires for power and control, and personal reasons like revenge, jealousy, and anger. Murder is also committed due to mental illness in a high percentage of people. None of the reasons for committing murder provides any benefit to the murderer or society.
