Morality Of Hunting

One of the more controversial topics around the world is if hunting is a good or bad thing for animals as well as the ecosystems. Gary Varner is an environmental philosopher who is on the side in favor of hunting. In fact, Varner’s view is that hunting is required in order to keep an ecosystem in-balance and healthy. Morality and suffering are two of the major factors that are used in Varner’s piece to support his side. There are critics of Varner’s viewpoint, and these will be addressed and responded to throughout the course of the paper. In this paper, I will share why I believe that Varner is right in saying that everyone should be in favor or some type of hunting, and what types of hunting I am for and against. Sport hunting is classified as, “hunting aimed at maintaining religious or cultural traditions, reenacting national or evolutionary history going certain skills, or just securing a trophy.” It is done in order to meet human needs. Sport hunting is where the most noise is heard from critics. These critics compare deer farms to zoos as they both take animals out of their natural habitat in the wild, and move them to an artificial habitat where humans are involved heavily in their lives. Deer farms are often times one of the best ways for hunters to get the best bucks with bigger racks and bodies. In order for deer farms to produce the best bucks, they must maintain the population below the standard number. This is so the deer are able to consume more and become bigger and stronger, more ideal for trophy hunters. However, in order for deer to reach their fullest potential, they must be kept for four or more years. Deer farms that are heavily hunted and populated, have shown that nearly 90 percent of the bucks that are hunted are less the four years of age. I believe that this is something that animal rights activists could do something about. Getting rules and regulations set in place to assure that the deer live better lives in their time at the farm. As a hunter, I am in favor of deer farms as they give you the best opportunity to get a nice deer with minimal effort. Trophy deer live healthy lives, even though they are stuck in captivity. If the deer farm has adequate space and food for the animals, they are living a ‘less stressful life’ than deer in the wild. They are never without a meal, and often times they are able to eat as much as they choose. However, I am not in favor of deer farms not being used to produce trophy deer. If the deer’s lifespan is cut short of the four to six years that they spend in the deer farms, I believe that they are being cheated of their

Some among the list include mountain lions, eagles, fishers, deer and even family pets. In January, a National Park Service employee accidentally stepped into one, just outside Glacier National Park. The next month, a dog got three of its legs caught in two different traps at once.…

Seasons, permits, and species have specific rules governing the type of firearm, bow, atlatl, and slingshot a person may use to hunt (Missouri Deer Hunting History). Deer populations are controlled by hunting. The government puts laws and regulations to ensure that the deer population is controlled, but not hunted to extinction. For those people that think hunters just go out in the woods and shoot as many deer as they can, it's not true.…

Since the dawn of time, humans have practiced the right to hunt whitetail deer to control the deer’s population growth rate. However, animal rights groups and pacifists alike are trying to take that right away from the American people. Not only does hunting have an enormous impact on the American lifestyle, but also gives the common people (including myself) a chance to observe and help maintain the wildlife and its environment. Recently, those opposed to this idea have started to conduct experiments on new, alternative ways of controlling the deer population. These new, alternative methods have been proven to be inefficient and to only work in enclosed areas.…

Sacrificing a quota of lions to hunters keep many other alive(Anderson and Downey).Basically, pro-hunters, believe that it is good for the ecosystem to kill these certain animals such as lions or elephants. Unlike the animals that are raised to be eaten, like ones in slaughterhouses, deer have a less likely chance of getting diseases. In slaughter houses the animals are crowded together. If one of the animals is infected with a disease or virus then it is likely that others will get it, contaminating more of the meat that people eat. Deer have been known to have a disease called Chronic Wasting Disease, but in experiments there is no evidence that it has been transmitted to people (source…

Deciding how to interact and improve the world through ethics and moral reasoning is an ongoing contentious debate that has lasted for thousands of years. Two of the largest moral theories to develop in the twentieth century, that try to deal with the world around us, is environmentalism and animal liberation. Environmentalism is best summarized as the moral principle that biotic communities and the relationships within those communities are of the utmost importance to preserve. Animal Liberation represents the belief that sentience of a being qualifies that individual for moral consideration. If Leopold’s maxim is followed as the standard for land ethicism and the “when” in his maxim is read as a necessary condition then animal liberation…
