The new faces of hunger are families that are living on minimum wage jobs, own a home, and are struggling with the choice of either paying bills or buying food. I live in Houston which ranks 4th in the nation for homes depending on SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program). The morning of my crowning I drove past several groups of people on the streets that all seemed to be holding a sign with the same message of being hungry. My worries that day seemed small in comparison to their life altering needs. From that point on I vowed to make a change.
Advocating for the cause of hunger starts by being a supporter and leader with a voice. In today’s society food doesn’t just represent sustenance.
