So, what have you eaten today? For some the thought of food brings guilt, to others it is a social or pleasurable experience and to all it is the staple of life. As Americans we have been blessed with so much of an abundance of food that we take it for granted. It’s with ease and accessibility of eating whatever and whenever we desire food. In our country of plenty there is a hidden epidemic growing in our communities. The alarming reality is that 21.6 % of American children live in food insecure households. One in five children nationwide struggle for proper nourishment which tragically affects the future of our society.
Food insecurity is much more than an empty stomach. The startling truth is that hunger affects not only the physical well being but also the mental health and social capabilities of a child. The new faces of hunger are families that are living on minimum wage jobs, own a home, and are struggling with the choice of either paying bills or buying food. I live in Houston which ranks 4th in the nation for homes depending on SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program). The morning of my crowning I drove past several groups of people on the streets that all seemed to be holding a sign with the same message of being hungry. My worries that day seemed small in comparison to their life altering needs. From that point on I vowed to make a change.
Advocating for the cause of hunger starts by being a supporter and leader with a voice. In today’s society food doesn’t just represent sustenance. The right foods represent health, well-being, and happiness. Not every act of service has to be on a grand scale – small acts lead to big changes. Together we can shape the future “One Can” at a
