Hunger In African American Children

I can see every day, people are going hungry. It’s not just the old anymore, the faces are getting younger and younger. According to www.feedingamerica.com, over 1 in 4 households (26.1%), are impoverished or food insecure. I understand this topic, because if people realize it or not, it affects many of my educational counterparts. One of my topics today is how I plan to fix this issue as an individual, and as a community. My main focus is going to be hunger, but specifically African American children under the age of 18.

According to www.http://hunger-research.sog.unc.edu, an overall 14% of Wake County or 133,460 children are living in a household that is food insecure. What is really sad to me, is how only about 56,280 of those children

I will not mention anyone, but I just notice these things. According to Dr. Oz, there are some foods that raise what is called the ‘happy drug’ in your brain, also known as dopamine. This affects the way you think, as well as self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, and other dangerous thoughts or actions. Even though there are lots of negatives in the aspect of hunger, there are positives, too. Last year, a great teacher showed my class a video. It showed the class how being raised in a poor home or having a bad upbringing can either ruin a life, or can make someone great. A wise man once said ‘Poverty is the schoolmaster of character’. There are so many ways to make the hunger situation better. Some ideas that are typically thought of is donating to the local food bank or spending time with the homeless shelter, or something along those lines. Nobody ever seems to think about how people who aren’t in these places and struggling would have paid for utilities, had easier payment plans, or something along those lines. I have a question: How many people in the room have seen a Public Service Announcement based on poverty or hunger? Now, how many of the people that raised their hands turned away or flipped the channel? People don’t want to see these sad faces, or the starving people, and that is part of the reason hunger is still prevalent among Americans. People always talk about how one person can make a difference and how nobody is too small to make a big change. This is a wake up call! We as a community can work to end hunger if people CARE! These were only just a few ways to reverse the hunger issue, and I just listed a

Hunger in America is a great problem but it can be prevented and eradicated as long as the nation has the will and determination to make it happen both on a national scale. In America alone, statistics prove that one in every six individuals face hunger on a regular basis. Although there is an astonishing amount of people who face hunger, this is not because there is an insufficient supply of food available in the country, but it is because many individuals are living in poverty or below the poverty line. Rosie, a young fifth grader living in Colorado, is one of millions of children who face hunger as a result of poverty. Rosie is dependent on neighbors and friends, food stamps, numerous charities and organization and relies on any other resources that can aid her in obtaining a sufficient amount of food.…

The first thing we did at Feed my Starving Children was to watch a video about all of the starving children in the locations that we would be helping. I think that seeing them and seeing how bad and famined they looked really showed us the truth. We often only think about the people in our own country or the people that we see every day. When we are eating lunch or going out to dinner we do not think about the hungry people in other countries. After that we split up into groups that represented different countries that we would be feeding.…

By showing the flaws of Government policies, or subsidizing wrong foods, or the integrity of the National Food Stamp Program is to not attack the problems, but hope people will be inspired to see the need for change and reform. Any way you look at it this documentary its goal is to have a number of implications to help combat hunger and benefit the national welfare of the country and its health. Jeff Bridges also points out boldly “that if another country was doing this to our kids we would be at war.” This quote says it all that not enough is being done to vocalize the hunger in this nation so therefor there hasn’t been any ethical implications take place to make a substantial difference. That alone is the reason this documentary and so many like it have been…

When a person thinks of hunger typically their mind goes to a third world country, where a sad, hungry child sit alone in the rain begging for food. Most people’s minds leave our country and travel halfway around the world to see the face of hunger. Our minds never stay close to home when we think of someone who is hungry. This is probably because we live in America one of the richest and fattest countries in the world. How could anyone go hungry in a land where there is over 14,000 McDonalds?…

“The Shocking Truth about Food Insecurity” was exceptionally intriguing to watch. The truth about food insecurity resonated with me because it is a major issue in which many children are not getting the reliable access to nourishing food because their family cannot afford it. I am familiar with the misconceptions that the speaker mentions in light of the fact I know people who are dealing with poverty and food insecurity because of temporary job loss, or disability diagnoses. I experienced the stigma associated with food assistance programs because I feel people would despise me for using it. This discussion provided me with enlightening contemplations about individuals battling with sustenance and that nourishing food are costly.…
