To understand the power discourses prevalent in The Hunger Games, I not only read the novel thoroughly but also watched the film of the same name quite closely. This was done in order to view the power discourses in action. When I read the book, it was up to my imagination to create the arena, the Capitol and the Districts in my mind, but when I watched the film, it was like giving voice to my thoughts. It helped me in understanding the discourses of power, technology, poverty and misery in a completely different way. Peeta Mellark is also selected from District 12 and has a secret crush on Katniss. Every district provides a mentor for the tributes and Katniss and Peeta’s mentor is Haymitch Abernathy-the only one from District 12 who won the games 24 years back and since then, has taken up a life of solitary alcoholism. Before the Games begin, the tributes are interviewed and Peeta confesses his love for Katniss live on the television, which leads the Capitol to portray them as ‘star-crossed’ lovers in the Games. Katniss is surprised with this revelation but Haymitch advises her to play along, as this will help them get sponsors who can help them during the Games. Katniss is upset because she has feelings for Gale Hawthorne- her friend and hunting partner from District 12. During the Games, Katniss develops an alliance with Rue, a 12 year old from District 11, and is devastated when she is killed. She devises a memorial for Rue as an act of rebellion towards the Capitol. As the Games continue, the game-makers announce a rule that there can be two victors if the boy and girl belong to the same district. After this announcement, Peeta and Katniss work as a team and are,in fact, the last two people standing; but the game makers change the rule again-that is to have one victor. Katniss’ rebellious act in Book One is a cause of many uprisings in other districts and President Snow threatens Katniss’ family and friends; and forces her to marry Peeta to calm the rebellions. Peeta gets to know that Katniss doesn’t love her in real but promises to help her anyway because even he doesn’t want the Capitol to win. Katniss and Peeta visit other districts as victors and plan their public wedding. While they put up with President Snow’s plan of the wedding and visits, Katniss fuels the rebellion inadvertently and her Mockingjay pin becomes a symbol for it. President Snow comes up with the idea of a special edition of 75thHunger Games-The Quarter Quell where all the previous victors have to participate; this forces Peeta and Katniss to participate in the Games again. Both of them, along with the other tributes, plan to destroy the arena and escape the Games. They are successful in their plan, and Katniss is rescued by the rebel forces of District 13. District 12 is destroyed completely and Peeta is captured by the capitol; of which Katniss comes to know later from
