Nightmares are something that you remember for a while and then generally forget the rest of your life. Nightmares are malevolent, terrible, and scary dreams that no one wants to dream about. The characters in the book Hunger by Michael Grant are living in a nightmare. It has been three months since all the adults and teenagers over the age of fourteen have disappeared like data expunged out of a computer (☺ simile). There is a huge dome that is surrounding Perdido Beach and Coates Academy and they can’t get out. Also, there is no connection to the outside word. Kids are developing powers. In Perdido Beach the food supply is very low. It is a lake without water (☺ metaphor). The efforts to supply food to Perdido Beach like Quinn (Sam’s best friend before the FAYZ) fishing and Orc (a colossal kid that lives in the FAYZ) picking cabbages isn’t enough. If they can’t get more food, then things will go from bad to worse. An example is people are hanging freaks (people with powers) for some food. When the battle was raging on at the old abandoned mine there was a hanging about to happen in Perdido Beach. The person responsible for the hanging was a kid named Zil (a kid who lives in the FAYZ). This happened because another person named Hunter (a kid that lives in the FAYZ with powers) killed Zil’s best friend Harry accidently by using his powers. Zil was outraged and decided that he needed to kill him for what he had done, so he tried to hang him. He needed more people to help him hang Hunter because he was so big. In order to get people to help him hang Hunter, he found their weakness; hunger, and used that as a way to get them to do what he wanted. Before they captured Hunter to hang, him he killed a deer. He used that deer to feed people, who would then help him hang Hunter. During the hanging Zil said, “You all want some of this delicious venison?” They roared their assent. “Then you’ll all grab on to the rope.”(Grant 523). It is an essential piece of equipment to protect, provide, and preserve (☺ Alliteration) the very lives in Perdido Beach. It would also mean the destruction of the town if weapons are in the wrong hands, and Zil is one of them. Ever since the killing of his best friend Harry, he has hated the freaks. He hates them so much he said when hanging Hunter; “Take him, the murdering mutant scum!”(Grant 523). Additionally, he made a group called the Human Crew or H.C. He wants to abolish every freak in the FAYZ and just have normal people remain. His plan is to take out one freak at a time. The problem is that his crew only has bats and their pure strength.
