Humphry Davy was an award winning chemist during the early 1800’s. He was born on December 17, 1778, in Penzance, Cornwall. He grew up neither poor nor rich, and was well educated. He showed off his curious and intelligent mind through the poems he wrote as a kid. When he was 17 years old, he became a surgeon apprentice, trying to work in the field of medicine. Davy became friends and lived with Davies Gilbert, who supported Davy’s life of science. Davy began his experiments mainly with gases. One of his more famous experiments was inhaling nitrous oxide, to test its disease-causing properties. That experiment got him a job as a chemical superintendent of the Pneumatic Institution.
