Me? I mean these women are my daughters and yet they have denied me the chance to speak at their weddings. I am their father for god sake! Is it because I refused to allow Bianca to marry before Kate? It couldn’t be? Could it? I am good-hearted and generous toward my two daughters, providing lavishing expensive books and lessons upon them both. This decision had to be of Kate’s. I do love her, but she is so extremely strong-willed, saying whatever she thinks and expressing whatever she feels, and her angry and abusive word, as well as her actions. No! What am I doing? I must stop this, talking about my own daughter in this way is just despicable. I really don’t want to blame anyone for his horrific decision to not let their own father to speak at their wedding. But if I had to, it would be Kate. This all revolves around the disguise of being others; also the taming of Kate, let along some of this has to revolve around myself.

Petruchio. I solely blame Petruchio. If it wasn’t for his attempts to cure Kate of her hostility, anger, and her violent nature, I might of have been granted the pride and joy of speaking at this wedding. Gremio, you and I both know that most if not all of us men secretly suspected at first that Kate’s wild nature will prove too much for Petruchio, and that’s a reason why I so happily agreed to Petruchio’s plan. Petruchio’s process to forcing Kate to love him, which is surprisingly similar to a real tamer’s process of domesticating that of a wild animal, involving steps of starving her, tempting her, treating her; making her dependent on him and ultimately confirming his status on her. My daughter does not deserve to be treated like that! Not at all! If only I didn’t agree to Petruchio’s idiotic

Furthermore, the host is utilizing his patriarchal authority over his daughter to accomplish his goal. Upon introducing Gawain to his daughter, the host states, “I bring you my daughter, if it does not displease you, for I have no more splendid entertainment to charm and please you” (“The Knight” 112). Immediately, the host is presenting his daughter as an object of entertainment, and fulfilling his role as a host by basically giving his daughter to Gawain to do with what he will for the night. The sense of ownership the host feels towards his daughter is obvious in his wording. The host is casting the daughter as an entertainment he has to give away, rather than allow her to introduce herself as an individual.…

The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare, is a comedic play of two unlike sisters by the names of Bianca and Katherine. Bianca, the youngest sister, wanted to get married and luckily she was wanted by all the men for she was seen as kind and beautiful. The only problem was that her older sister Katherine needed to be married first, but no one wanted her because she was an irrational and wild woman that needed to be tamed by someone. But while many seemed to strongly believe this about Katherine, she actually turned out to be the most obedient wife, even compared to Bianca who only looked like she could be a great wife. Throughout the play Shakespeare is able to develop the character of Katherine from being a shrew who needed taming, to being a compliant wife through the harsh way she is described, and her aggressive actions and dialogue.…

In Taming of the Shrew, William Shakespeare explores the themes of dominance and power through Petruchio and Katherine’s relationship. Katherine’s fiery personality and lack of patience causes many conflicts to occur between her and other characters; when Petruchio and Kate first meet, Katherine’s insults don’t faze him and he actually accepts the verbal duel. The wordplay of this passage contains a hidden sense of power and control which establishes Petruchio with the upper hand by his manipulation of Kate’s sharp-tongue insults into sexual innuendo. The animal imagery provides insight into Petruchio’s intention to tame Katherine and foreshadows her submission. Moreover, the physical threat made by Petruchio is an act of superiority.…

Comparative Essay Today saying that women are property of men would come as a shock in present times, but the gender roles that Petruchio and Torvald had in their time, it would be expected. In both The Taming of the Shrew and A Doll’s House, Petruchio and Torvald do an excellent job of showing the roles they had during their time. Petruchio and Torvald show the role of men during this time by gaining sovereignty, creating their perfect spouse, men’s misogynic attitudes toward women, and the result of the men gaining preeminence. Gender norms is shown throughout both of these literary works.…

The daughter is portrayed as timid, and consequently only speaks twice, in which she defends her innocence to her mother: “But I don’t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school…” (Kincaid 483). The mother does not respond to the daughter adding to the dismissive characterization of the mother. The instructions the mother gives show the girl “how to perform and protect oneself from discrimination when she is under the proverbial watchful eye of this patriarchal community,” (Bailey 111). In this society, female power is limited, and it is made evident that women only control their domestic responsibilities and their sexuality.…
