My Mushy Gushy Christmas Letter

Kaylee & Shalissa,

Here is my wedding toast for Kaylee’s wedding. I felt so much relief I didn’t have to actually give it in public. I love both of you.

Speeches have never been my thing. I remember four years ago sitting at Shalissa’s wedding, panicking because I had forgotten that you give toasts at weddings. There was so much I wanted to say, but I couldn’t find the words in my panic. I ended up babbling on and no one really knew what I was talking about. I still wish I could have that moment back.

Thankfully, I remember Kaylee’s toast. I can’t remember her exact words, but I do remember that she expressed her happiness that her friend found Chet, because he truly loved Shalissa and they made each other happy. I am so grateful Kaylee found the words to express what I couldn’t. Kaylee, today I want to say this to you. I am so happy that you found Travis. I think he is pretty awesome! I especially like his cardigan jokes. And, I love that both of you are English majors so I can end my toast referencing my favorite love story-one of a little prince and his rose.

As I sat on the metal folding chair, thinking at any moment the wobbly legs would sink into the earth and drop me on the grass, which of course didn’t happen. While listening to the birds in the nearby trees singing with joy and happiness, it was as if they knew why we were there. The bronze casket glistened in the sun as the pallbearers placed it on the frame over the open grave. Numbness engulfed me the moment, I learned of my husband’s death. A week later, I knew I needed to keep up the appearance of a grieving widow as a tear rolled down my cheek.…

Giving Up Is Never An Option Work hard, dream big, was always the APHA motto, but up until this point I didn’t fully understand what this meant with horse riding. I was showing at the American Paint Horse Youth Worlds show in Fort Worth, Texas and was competing with a horse I had just met two days ago. My trainer, Kelly Chapman, traveled to Texas with me and decided to put me in a jumping class. Now, if you know me you would definitely never put me in a jumping class because I have very little experience with it but, Kelly being the stern and enthusiastic trainer I know, had a lot of faith in me to compete well with my new horse Zeke.…

Male dominance is undoubtedly evident and the significance of the rose alludes to the argument that women are subordinate in this short story. Although a rose is never presented in the story, the title implies that the flower is being given to a female. Timothy O'Brien’s journal, Who Arose for Emily?, supports this assertion by connecting it to Miss Emily and Homer Barron’s relationship, “As for the story’s critics, they focus on the cultural symbolism of the rose itself. It can represent Emily as a treasured memory. It can refer to Homer Barron as Emily’s romantic rose, a keepsake rose..” (101).…
