Humorists In Alan De Botton's Status Anxiety

Society, as a whole, is like a well-run clock. The combination of multiple different pieces, all with varying functions, all working together, and all serving unique roles produces a fantastically designed final product. Interestingly enough, our culture is analogous to the running of a time-keeping machine. Society also includes many different individuals who have personal beliefs and opinions, and each individual serves a vital purpose to the overall purpose of the group formed by these individuals. Alan de Botton, in his book Status Anxiety, argues that humorists are one of the most important individuals involved in our society, as they are able to deliver oftentimes controversial messages to their audiences. A seemingly basic principle of humorists’ strategy, it is still important to note the crucial role humor plays out in the work of comedians. De Botton claims humorists serve an important role—but in what way? Their ability to directly address extremely controversial topics can only be attained through the use of humor, and it also serves several different purposes. Firstly, it better expands the views of an issue. Many times a viewer may not be fully aware of current controversies or debates going on, so a hearty ridiculing or parody of one such situation could better explain it to that viewer. Secondly, it helps lighten the overall mood surrounding the issue. A good old fashioned gag reel about a questionable bill proposed by Congress can lift spirtis and improve attitudes; a sketch involving the national debate about legal gay marriage can also help soothe tension between the opposing sides.
