This study was mainly done to see if the use of humor has to do with the self-perceptions of mental and physical health in older adults. This study suggested that there are three different domains of behaviors, “that have been shown to positively influence the aging process; avoidance of disease and disability, maintenance of high physical and cognitive function and sustained engagement in social and productive activities” (Marziali 713). In a study a few doctors named, Celso, Ebener and Burkhead, revealed that there was a correlation between health status and coping humor. Related studies have shown that there is a correlation between having a sense of humor and being able to cope with stress. There are numerous factors that have influenced the maintenance of health status in older adults, “social support network, self efficacy, and spirituality/religiosity” (Marziali 714). Social support can be found as a way to cope with stress and a protective factor in the way of moderating the effects of mental and physical health. In a study with thirty-two undergraduate social work students they did an experiment on the relationship between self-rating of stress and stress related physical symptoms. With research findings, they found positive stress and symptoms that found liking humor was associated with the view of poor wellbeing. Research shows that using humor socially can be correlated to low levels of stress and humor can be responsible for lowering the effects of stress, “the use of humor by social workers and their colleagues is probably one of the most readily and frequently nominated coping mechanisms” (Moran 502). Humor is a phenomenon and is very complex. Research has shown that, “concluded that humour can enhance communication, facilitate cognitive reframing and social support, and possibly has physical benefits” (504). Humor can come in many different forms such as, how it can be a characteristic of a person, the, “environment, or the person-environment interface” (Moran 504). The relationship with humor and stress depends on the events that are occurring at that time. Depending on that the levels of stress will be higher or lower.
