Humor In Frances Burney's Use Of Satirical Essay

Humor is a tricky concept to pin down. In the dictionary, it is defined as “a comic, absurd, or incongruous quality causing amusment” (Dictionary.com). This quality, whatever it is, is much more complicated than that however. Most people can probably identify what things they find humorous—knock-knock jokes or political satire or situational comedy—but the reason behind why they find something funny is much more elusive. “Because it just is” is the answer that most readily springs to mind. From Aristotle to Freud, philosophers and psychologists have spent countless hours debating and discussing and creating theories to explain the phenomena that is humor. Thus far, no one theory has been able to provide a complete answer; each has loopholes of its own. Identifying the comedic elements that make something funny is a slightly easier task, and one that this essay will attempt concerning Frances Burney’s second novel, Cecilia. Her coming-of-age tale gives readers a front row seat in the world of the story’s protagonist (and title character), Cecilia Beverly. The action starts right in the middle of Cecilia’s life, a few years before she turns twenty-one, as she …show more content…
However, modern readers classify comedies using stricter standards; namely, to be labeled “comedy,” the goal of the work in question should be to make its audience laugh. This was most likely not Burney’s purpose in writing Cecilia; it reads much more as a social and moral commentary than it does a joke book. Nonetheless, it is arguable that Burney did not set out to write a tragedy, either. The sad parts of her novel seem to exist simply as a way to further the plot, while her literary talent truly shines when she crafts humorous scenes. The key to the humor in the story is that the people and situations Cecilia encounters are not stuck in the eighteenth century; they are applicable even to modern day

In Harrison Bergeron, author Kurt Vonnegut, uses Irony to support the satire which mocks the theme of equality. In this dystopian world everyone is the same and if one is different in one way they must wear handicaps. For example, one of high intellect must wear a transmitter that sends a massive noise to the user every time few seconds so they cant think more than they have too or must and one who is pretty than another must wear a mask that actually makes them uglier than the average person like the ballerinas. Evidence of this is found where George is thinking that dancers shouldn't have handicaps but is interrupted by the noise and how the ballerinas wear hideous masks so they have to be extremely beautiful. These things will never be…

There are many ways things can be humorous. To be considered humorous, however, a literature piece should have some aspects of humor in it. Dave Barry, an award winning author and columnist, wrote the very rhetorical “Dave Barry 's Manliness Manifesto”. Barry’s key to making his piece humorous was by using common humor elements; such as, satire and irony. Rachel Callman, a writer for Tosh.0, is the author of “Selfie’s Word of the Year Acceptance Speech,” which is a very satirical piece which depicts a stereotypical personification of the word selfie.…

In the novel, I Can't Make This Up written by Kevin Hart, and the short story A Modest Proposal written by Jonathan Swift, humor is used to highlight the faults in society. Whether it is stealing, racial tension, poverty, height, or an abusive relationship. Kevin uses a morbid style of humor to release the tension of his audiences, and also the reader. In A Modest Proposal, humor is used by the author to offer an absolutely ridiculous recommendation to deal with poverty. The title is ridiculous, and there's humor in it because the suggestions were that poorer children are asked to be eaten, this is anything but ‘modest’.…

Sherman Alexie uses humor as a way to connect his stories with the readers. In one of his interviews the famous writer says "I think being funny breaks down barriers between people"(Nygren 299). It is easy for one to infer that humor is not necessarily added into his stories to make the audience laugh, but to make a sort of crude emphasis to what Sherman Alexie is trying to state with his writings. In other words, one could look at Sherman Alexie's work as ice cream, and at the humor like its cherry. Without the cherry, ice cream for most people remains to be a good dessert, but the cherry is that finishing detail that makes of that particular ice cream something more special.…

One of the most obvious things I think anyone would notice in Oliver’s videos, is his use of humor. He does not just use humorous rhetoric to be funny, but it also gets your attention. When Oliver makes comparisons of serious issues to things that are comical, it makes viewers want to keep watching and even want to agree with him because he comes across as a funny, likable guy who knows what he is talking about. Not only do humorous comparisons make his show entertaining, but they also make what he is trying to explain easy to understand. An example of how he does this can be seen in the video about Government Surveillance.…

This sketch was one of the many moments Saturday Night Live as particularly feminist. Fey and Poehler, along with writer and performer Seth Meyers pointed out the fact that the way American politics was sexist; they were not going to remain quiet about, instead they pointed it out through a parody and got people thinking about the qualifications of the candidates rather than their sex. Another humorous feminist moment during the 2008 election was when Fey guest starred during a Weekend Update segment and called out people for calling Hillary Clinton “a bitch,” and, “along with heavily pregnant feminist bestie Poehler, turned her rant into a legendary tirade. She said yeah, Clinton was a bitch, and so was she, and so was Poehler, because “bitches get shit done”, turning an insult into a rallying cry” (Henderson). Fey and Poehler do so much for feminism, they do it with humor and sass but they get people thinking about women’s rights and get others to reassess how they view women.…

Humor is most definitely an important part of the specific writing techniques that Corina Zappia uses. She uses this humor to describe the unique Filipino dishes in a way that makes you want to laugh and hold back vomit all in one sitting. Another great example of this unique humor that adds to what you're saying is when Zappia talks about pig's blood stew. She describes the stew with disgust, stating, "the opaque, blackish-gray stew sitting there like some dark metaphorical abyss, The Heart of Darkness trapped between paper napkins and the rice cooker."
