Humor In Andy Weir's The Martian

The red planet is being colonized by one man trapped on Mars. Mark Watney, the lone colonizer of Mars, lives inside his HAB (Habitat) stranded on Mars. His team had left him, consequently he now has to survive until he can travel home, but he doesn’t have enough food. Mark dreams that he will make it home safe and sound, although he thinks he knows he won’t; but he still tries. The author of The Martian has led an interesting life, as well as his main protagonist Mark Watney. Through Andy Weir’s writing, fictional astronaut Mark can incorporate humor in a science fiction reality, which is difficult to do. The Martian is interesting, but that is probably because its author is just as interesting. California was where Weir had been born and raised, the only child of an accelerator physicist father and an electrical-engineer mother who divorced when he was eight (“Andy Weir.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation). …show more content…
Mars is a gigantic desert, so it has many sandstorms. That means the rocks are smooth, but one must still go over them. “The undercarriage of the rover is taller than any of the rocks around here, and the hills are gently sloping affairs, smoothed by eons of sandstorms” (Weir, 96). Driving on a deserted desert planet is cool, and dangerous, therefore it is probably inhabited with aliens. One of the first Mars rovers was Pathfinder, so it would just be boring without it. Pathfinder delivered a stationary lander, including a surface rover to the Red Planet. “By my reckoning, I’m about 100 kilometers from Pathfinder” (Weir, 97). Pathfinder being one of the first rovers on a different planet, then Pathfinder would have even more Sci-fi throughout its’ indescribable veins . Mark wants to find it so that he can communicate with NASA. Overall The Martian has a good amount of Science Fiction incorporated into it; being on a different planet and

The connection between my article Mars, the red planet and The Martian by Andy Weir is that Mark Watney uses Mars’s two moons Phobos and Deimos to help him travel to the Pathfinder so he can communicate with NASA for help. When he travels at night he can’t see any of the landmarks like the craters to help him know the direction he is going so he uses Phobos and Deimos to help him travel. “Mars doesn’t have a magnetic field. So I navigate by Phobos. It whips around Mars so fast it actually rises and sets twice a day, running west to east.…

Honky takes the serious issue of racism and shines a light on certain aspects by using comedy and satire as tools to support and help illustrate topics discussed on stage. My focus of this paper will be on two actors that I believe personify comedy and seriousness the most in this production, Sam Richardson as Dr. Driscoll and Judd Johnson as Thomas Hodge. Richardson and Johnson both focused heavily in these two categories in Mikell Pinkley’s production of Honky, but Richardson’s comedic take on Dr. Driscoll was more engaging and successful than Johnson’s serious and somewhat monotonous portrayal of Thomas Hodge. Richardson’s character physically acted very erratically, which offset serious tones surrounding his scenes.…

The Phoenix Mars Lander is a spacecraft that NASA sent to Mars that descended on May 25, 2008. This unmanned mission was to provide insight on whether Mars had been able to sustain life by searching for water. During its mission, Phoenix confirmed the existence of water ice on Mars, which suggests the capability of being able to sustain life roughly 100,000 years ago.…

A book that I have enjoyed recently is The Martian by Andy Weir. The Martian starts with Mark Watney (Main Character) who is hit by a piece of a satellite antenna during a colossal sandstorm while trying to escape the Martian atmosphere. Watney’s captain tries to search for him but he is nowhere to be found and the crew presumes him dead. The next day he wakes up with part of the antenna lodged in his stomach. Over time NASA figures he is alive through satellite imaging.…

At times of their life, humans naturally feel isolated and closed off from the world. During such times, isolation can cause humans to transform, experiencing changes in personality or attitude, usually for the worst. This type of isolation, however, is a novelty compared to the what astronaut Mark Watney underwent when he was abandoned on Mars, fifty million kilometers away from the nest human, in the novel The Martian by Andy Weir. After the HAB, the astronauts’ base in which they can maneuver without their spacesuits and Watney’s only sanctuary, explodes, Watney loses his ability to communicate with NASA and thus loses all contact with other living beings. With no hope of survival, Watney is forced to face the reality of never getting back…

    1) (a)The part of The Martian i found really interesting was the ‘poop scene’. Mark was on mars with a limited supply of food and water so he has to think fast on how to survive on mars till NASA saves him. Luckily he studied botany and was good at it. Mark thought of using dirt from mars and getting his own waste to fertilize the dirt so he can grow plants, using tarps to cover the mechanical equipment, and using a machine to generate water using fire and filling the room with oxygen and water to keep the fuels healthy. Poop has a lot of nutrients that plants need to grow.…

One of his biggest problems is getting enough food to stay on Mars for about 4 years. The red planet has no water , plant growth, or bacteria, so Mark has to use his science skills to get plants to grow with what he has. Mark uses his poop to create bacteria in the dry , dusty soil and he creates water to grow potatoes for his food. “They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially ‘colonized’ it. So technically, I colonized Mars.”…
