Stress can be caused for a physical or emotional change in a certain situation or the environment that surrounds them. Humor can moderate the effects of a stressful experience and it can also play as an emotional-focused coping response. In the article “Nurses’ experiences of humour in clinical settings” it states that, “humor is a cognitive, emotional, behavioral, psychological and social phenomenon.” Humor is integrated into our daily lives and the world that surrounds us; “it is regarded as a means of dealing with one’s problems, and a generally positive and universal experience for people from different cultural and social backgrounds around the world and is defined as a person’s ability to appreciate the funny side of a situation” (Ghaffari …show more content…
In a study with thirty-two undergraduate social work students they did an experiment on the relationship between self-rating of stress and stress related physical symptoms. With research findings, they found positive stress and symptoms that found liking humor was associated with the view of poor wellbeing. Research shows that using humor socially can be correlated to low levels of stress and humor can be responsible for lowering the effects of stress, “the use of humor by social workers and their colleagues is probably one of the most readily and frequently nominated coping mechanisms” (Moran 502). Humor is a phenomenon and is very complex. Research has shown that, “concluded that humour can enhance communication, facilitate cognitive reframing and social support, and possibly has physical benefits” (504). Humor can come in many different forms such as, how it can be a characteristic of a person, the, “environment, or the person-environment interface” (Moran 504). The relationship with humor and stress depends on the events that are occurring at that time. Depending on that the levels of stress will be higher or lower. For an example, for students that are going through finals, their stress levels tend to be high. With using humor to cope with that stress, it can lower the stress levels. Psychologists have done research to show the effects of humor and how it can create positive therapy for the old age. Since the baby boomers age is increasing over time, so is depression and anxiety. Through humor therapy and different humor treatments, people of old age saw an improvement in the quality of life and the well being of ones self. With older adults, psychotherapy has helped drastically during the recent decades along with how the process is very cooperative. A mental health such as depression is a complex condition that has different causes and manifestations. In a scholarly article by Scott Ciera, a clinical trial shows that a fraction of severely depressed clients responded to serotonin-enhancing antidepressants. This medication failed because every person is unique and the psych-education of the process of change itself is short-changed. A central feature is humor when it comes to psychotherapy for older adults. Humor plays as an integral role in the development of positive therapeutic alliance between the therapist and the client. When it comes to a depressed patient they tend to be extremely guarded and reluctant patient that is not in treatment. Depression can cause the patients to have negative thoughts and it can lead them to be reluctant when opening up about positive experiences.
